[x] joe averages have won the main event since moneymaker

[ ] joe averages have triggered a new moneymaker effect

[x] Phil Ivey winning the ME will help people realise poker is a skill game and new fish will start playing

320k on break. - Team Ivey
Definitely has some work to do. Looks like there are about 300 left.

Apparently Eastgate doubled up/won a huge pot since he's sitting on 770k now. Hope of a Raymer-like run or better is that much stronger now.

I am watching the Main Event 2005 right now with 27 players remaining. It's so ****ing annoying to see how every year since less and less pros seem to make it deep. In 2005, Ivey, Matusow, Raymer, Black and a few other big names where left at that stage.

I know that is a popular pastime in NVG to speculate how many new fish a certain winner will bring to the game. But poker had its boom with the Moneymaker win and nonstop rebroadcasts of past Main Events by ESPN. If someone isn't already playing poker by now, the idenity of the 2009 ME winner is not going to make one bit of difference in attracting new players to the game.

That being said, it a rather bizarre line of argument to claim that an unskilled fish would suddenly want to learn the game because one of the biggest high rollers/most skilled players in the poker world wins the Main Event.

KEVIN SAUL OVER PLAYS BIG SLICK

Bombing Run!
Tom Schneider raised to 22,000 and Kevin Saul reraised to 62,000. Schneider reraised to 192,000 and Saul moved in.

Schneider immediately called with AA Saul's AK was in big trouble. The board came a veritable set of blanks and Saul was crippled to 50,000 (eliminated next hand).

Former WSOP Player Of The Year Tom Schneider is now on about 2,100,000.

That's because pros are really nothing special. For every name pro, there are THOUSANDS of unknown players who are just as good at tournament poker. Nothing can really change this fact, it's just the nature of the game. If you want to see name players, invitation-only tourneys or cash games are the only option. There is no real poker aristocracy, it's all made-for-TV fantasy, as the WSOP main event demonstrates every year.

Alot of non-poker players (who are no degens) avoid poker because they think it is a gambling game. I doubt people get fascinated by the hugh luck factor when a non-pro wins.

Ofcourse the big moneymaker boom wouldnt make sence in this case. But a pro can trigger a different group of participants.

Mostly true, except some name pros do have a slight advantage over the average Joe (e.g. Ivey, Cunningham, Juanda). Even PH, with his bizarro counter-intuitive style.

Not sure what nintendere was talking about, since 2006 and 2007 had one big name pro go absurdly deep (Allen Cunningham and Scotty Nguyen) while 2008 had Hellmuth and Matusow finish very deep as well. I mean, yeah, maybe not as stacked as 2005, but still pretty significant.

Anyway, Eastgate's double-up hand was just posted:

After a flop of {7-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} Peter Eastgate was all in with {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} against the {A-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} of Gabe Walls.

Walls misses his flush draw when the board fills out {7-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds} {9-Spades} {6-Clubs} and Eastgate doubles up.

Peter Eastgate - 770,000
Gabe Walls - 1,300,000

God he runs good. I honestly don't think its possible for him to lose a flip.

So depressing as we get down towards the FT to again watch the cream sink to the bottom while the crap rises to the top.

Per his twitter. He's struggling, but hardly crippled.
