There are several reasons many players won't be playing at the Rio during the 2021 WSOP. For some, the buy ins may be too high or to small; some may not like the venue; obviously, a major reason is the Covid rules that are being imposed at the Rio that are already turning off many.

This is the place to discuss major alternative tournaments in Las Vegas that take place during the duration of the WSOP at the Rio in 2021. Which ones do your recommend? Any live streams links? Hand discussions? Celebrity sightings? Pros and cons of such tournaments?

Please limit your discussions to tournaments that are major and are within few minutes drive from the Rio.

Without trying to start a **** storm will these Alternative Tournaments require masks at the table given the current state requirements? Personally I hate the idea of wearing a mask for 10 hours straight. I was planning to play an event at the Wynn during my time in Vegas but it that is a requirement I will not bother. I also love the deep stack at Venetian so most likely would have hit one of those as well.

That's the thing. You will be required to wear masks in these other tournaments. The RIO, you won't be. I will be exclusivley at the Rio. Not wearing a mask.

Maybe by the time these tournaments play the mask requirement will be gone. If not I will modify my schedule to also play only at the Rio. I am not afraid to sit next to unvaccinated but wearing a mask is a no go for me.

I’d much rather wear a useless mask that I hate to play live than to take an experimental gene therapy that is useless. The price to pay to leave the internet and play with people that are terrible.

Yes, if you're inside the casino playing poker, you'll currently need to wear a mask.

The size of the WSOP allows them to remove the mask mandate while players are seated at the table.

So have you heard anything about the governor/gaming ending the mask requirement any time soon?

Once COVID cases go under 50 per 100,000 and the COVID positivity test rate drops to 5% for two straight weeks, the mask mandates will be removed.

I believe Clark County is currently around 175 per 100,000 while test positivity is at 8.6%

Which, of course, defeats a large part of the purpose of masks, because it's well known the virus likes to go through the nose.

You make three incorrect characterizations.

Useless
There is plenty of evidence the vaccines used in the US are not useless they are not as effective against delta as they are against alpha. They are not perfect against any variant but against all variants they provide protection particularly against severe disease and mortality. Perfect no but useless definitely also no.

Gene therapy
First the JnJ is a classic virus do I assume you are referring to mRNA vaccines. Yes they are genetic based and use genetic material of the covid virus. But these mRNA vaccines do not modify the human genetic material like gene therapy does. There are plenty of more technical points on the differences between genetic based and gene therapy but maybe the most telling in this case is duration. Gene therapy is designed to last decades or even a lifetime while mRNA vaccines are rapidly degraded in the body.

Experimental
First an EUL is not experimental drug. It is not fully approved but it has moved beyond experimental. The FDA is very clear on this. But even were this true the Pfizer vaccine is now fully approved. Moderna is not far behind. JnJ I am less certain of timing for full approval but expect this year.

So all three of your “reasons” to avoid vaccination for covid are simply BS. Should you be mandated to get vaccinated to partake in society? No. But you should IMO want to get vaccinated at least if you are ~25 or younger. However it should be your choice and decision.
