Yep, that's exactly what we should do.

It's a strange tournament, with baffling qualifying criteria and impenetrable rules once the final is set. But it's really a fun tournament for amateurs, where they can win/luck themselves in to a sumptuous holiday and the chance to play against some pros, on TV, and for their share of $100,000.

This year's was the third World Cup I've been to and on every single occasion, I've been kind of swept away in the spirit of friendly competition that pervades. The play is invariably atrocious (and that's why "World Cup of Poker" is definitely a misnomer in any meaningful sense) but the teams take it massively seriously and the prize money means a big deal. (They haven't paid anything to enter, obviously.)

So yes, laugh at its billing (and yes, laugh at the ludicrousness of the hand itself) but the vitriol and xenophobia being poured out at this guy is way out of proportion. Please believe the people that were actually there, though: this was NOT an intentional slowroll. Sorry to be a killjoy, but that's the truth.

The guy is a $5 sit and go player, who genuinely wondered whether he should be putting his entire team's well-being at risk. Yes, yes, I know he had aces and any player worth the name should be happy to get it all in pre-flop with aces. But the World Cup is a peculiar team event, where in the final five players play from the same stack as a team. They have built this up over three (non-televised) days.

As the most inexperienced player on the team, this guy simply didn't feel comfortable jeopardizing his whole team's tournament and opted to double check with his captain.

Jan Heitmann, the team captain, actually said afterwards that HE had called the timeout from the stands when he saw his player looking uneasy. The television footage shows the player at the table making the "T" for timeout with his hands, but this was in response to Heitmann's suggestion.

There are a couple of comments on a few forums on the subject from people who were at the event - myself included. And everyone there will tell you (including Suharto, Pagano and Heitmann) that he really didn't intend to slowroll.

By all means laugh at how ridiculous it is, but it's nothing to get vindictive and xenophobic about. It simply shows a beginner making a mistake of etiquette. The guy wouldn't have even known the meaning of the world "slowroll" before it happened; there is absolutely nothing intentional about his actions.

We will never know for sure, but i would have to agree with this.

Each team had 1 pro, 2 solid grinders players and 2 guys who won 1 freeroll !

Those freeroller were scared as possible to play and be the team player who "lost". (the US guy also took quite some time to call with AK when Darus shoved A7 (from an almost atc spot).

During the 3 days we played them that German kid acted in accordance to the etiquette (and we played them heads up on day 2), and i would have to beleive a slowroll is still and "advance" play he could not pull.

As weird as it sounds, those freerollers received weird advice from teammates and he could have taken the "in doubt call time out" too far and too litterally.

Also from where I was standing (2 feet beside Jan and team germany), it felt like the caoch Jan was the first one to talk about time out and the kid might have just thought, better be safe than sorry.

I have no reason to defend him especially considering i was at the other hand of the move (being on team Canada), but i would assume it was a weird moment, but not neccessarily with a bad intention.

And if it was...karma got them back when we took germany out and hour or so later...

Generally speaking, most of the freeroller rapidly knew they were outmatch, and while that one was the weirdest one, i saw some move that clearly spelled "please dont let me be the one who eliminate my team" state of mind.

I played a lot with Jan and Rasmus from germany during the tourney, and can assure these guys were all class act during the whole event.

Slowroll or not, the rest of the German team and german people should not be held accountable for one of their teamates weird play !

Would have been epic if after the timeout the german player comes back to the table, makes a move like folding, go into the tank and says "ahhhh I have to call"

i dont get it why you are having a problem with the commentator calling his action ******ed.

im not a native english speaker. however, even i know ******ed also means slowed down. so why shouldnt you say that on camera? just a joke about the ***********y of the word.

or do i just not get the irony if yes, i am sorry

And no I'm not even close to Germany.
I agree, it's close to 12 year old speak when you say something like that, even worse when he tries to sound sophisticated by saying "on so many levels" ridiculous, if he pulls those antics again he should never be a commentator again.

and who cares about the slow roll, get over it, I will never understand why people care about such little things. yeah it's annoying but GET OVER IT.

I'm saying when you say something so rude and vulgar, and then follow it up on "so many levels", it makes the person sound like a moron.

for example, here's another version "that was ****ing gay on so many levels", geez, just say it was foolish or stupid, if you're a professional and you're commentating, you should never use the word "******ed" there.

and yes who cares about slow rolls, everyone's life has a lot more problems than a maneuver like that, I have been slow rolled many times before and every time I was just like "whatever", people don't have thick skin anymore.
