I just saw something that made me sick on High Stakes Poker. I watched a dealer palming chips while he brought them into the center of the pot. If you don't know this "move", it is when the dealer grabs the chips with his palm face down and grabs a bunch of chips and brings them all into the middle of the pot. It looks like he is squeezing the chips in his hand. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR A DEALER TO DO THIS! They can just as easily be scooped into the pot with the side of his palm, or his open hand. The only time a dealer has to grab chips and stack them is in Hi-Lo Split games. Any other time you see it, something funny is going on. Once again, there is no reason for a dealer to have to "pick up" the chips to bring them into the center!

So you may wonder what is going on here. Well, it's one of the oldest moves in the book. A reasonably accomplished dealer can easily palm a chip and hide it in their hand. Then he deals the next card(s), and very quickly puts that chip away (many places to hide a chip). It's a slight of hand trick that even an amateur magician can pull off. Most players, when they see stuff like this, they think it is just the normal way for this dealer to bring chips in. WRONG! You are now getting robbed!

When I saw it happen on High Stakes Poker, I couldn't believe it. All these smart and savvy gamblers missed it. He got them on a pot where everyone was talking. How strong is it to steal one (1) thousand dollar chip out of a pot with tens of thousands in it. No one will miss it, will they? But the dealer just made a big pay day. I know Doyle knows this move, but he wasn't paying attention at the moment it happened. No one was.

I've seen this move made successfully by dealers in games as small as 10-20 (with $5 chips), and in all the black chip games. And the pit bosses know what's happening as well. Just a word to the wise by one who has been there and had it shown to me by a VERY experienced dealer. He told me he used to double his wages (plus tips) every day by using this move about once a round.

I think stealing chips on a televised show would be the most unproductive thing in the long run.

Link?

Do you honestly think someone would be stupid enough to do this during a televised game?

My mate did this in a home game, he wasn't the dealer though, he just wanted some money.

This.

All you have to do is go to the corresponding episode on youtube and link it. Make sure to tell us the exact time frame that it takes place.

Thank you.

I don't know how to link this on youtube. It is during a 2007 game that was shown today between 5 and 6 PM PST. Of course, you won't see the chip in the dealer's hand, but you will see the move clearly if you watch closely. I only noticed it once during the episode, but that doesn't mean it was the only time it happened. If he did it once, he may have done it more than once. People tend to be greedy, especially when they think they are getting away with something.

For a thousand dollars - YES! Like I said you can't really see anything but the move being made. No camera will catch this one because it all happens underneath the palm. Now if you had a camera following the dealer's hand after he deals the next card you might see the same hand move toward his body for an instant. And that's the completion of the move. Or it can be going up his shirt sleeve!

Thread really needs a link. I'm not even sure how the move is done from the way you're describing it.

For those who want to find the show, Season 4, Episode 14 (when they had the $500,000 buyin game).

Correct! Thanks. I'm a lot better at spotting a cheat than doing something online. I've seen cold decks brought into a game (in a casino), dealers who stacked the deck and dealers who delivered the right card to a player (usually the guy sitting in the one or the nine seat). Also have seen dealers flash the next card to the guy in the nine seat.

And in cut pot games, let the player's beware is all I have to say. When you let the dealer reach into the pot and remove chips......good luck is all I have to say. Anyone who doesn't think these kind of things happen (and more) is very naive.

It was somewhere near the end of show. Definitely past the half way point. Maybe at about the 40-45 minute mark. If you watch you'll see it. They actually had the camera on his hands for a few seconds. He was grabbing thousands of dollars in chips. Of course he didn't know his hands were on camera. He was busy doing his thing.

P.S. If the dealer thinks someone may have spotted him he can just drop the chip back into the pot. Pretty foolproof little move.

FYI, If this is The Jay I think It is , and judging by his location it is...then I know him from the pool world, and he is triple smart. So If he suspects something it's for a reason.

Look at part three of this show. Then go to about the 7.20 mark and watch closely what happens in the next 2-3 seconds. THAT'S the move!

Sure I know you. You were a top player when you were a kid. I might have seen you play once or twice at Chelsea.

the 7:20 mark or so is what OP is referring to here, but I'll let everyone judge for themselves, I'm not very good at spotting this kind of stuff.

He has no reason to grab those chips off the table like that. They could have just as easily been scooped into the center. And by using a stack of bills, that gives him even more cover.

To me it looks like he just grabs a bunch of chips. I see what you mean though, how palming a chip is possible there.
