I know nothing about NFTs and tweets.

What I have seen get the most traction is sports memorabilia in the form of video clips.

NFT market is in its infacy. it will continue to expand into some areas that are already here and obvious (video sports memorabilia) , and expand into many many others that are not so obvious.

Call it stupid. Call it worthless. Call it a fad.

Its not going away and will continue to grow exponentially for the foreseeable future. It will grown into some areas that are easy to forecast and more importantly grow into others that have yet to be contemplated.

It might make sense as a public registry of who owns what work, including real world artwork. Whether owning some of the things it's intended to apply to makes sense is another thing.

However what happens if someone resells something outside this system. Then the NFT no longer represents ownership, right?

I got excited about NFTs for a minute; the problem is that for an NFT to hold value, you have to have faith in the organization/individual creating it not to flood the market with it. The NBA is already seeing their market collapse because they aren't limiting supply (as you'd expect them not to do given the money they can make). Like...is anyone really excited to own an NFT of a Mike Conley jumpshot against the Pelicans in February? When there's also ~2500 others for sale?

NFTs are seeing the same thing that happened in the early 90s with sports cards, and the industry will see the same result - a bunch of new stuff that people are excited about that turns out to be by and large worthless due to overproduction, while the older stuff likely holds it's value. The industry just evolved much faster due to the nature of the internet and the ease of market entry; instead of having 15 minutes of fame, NFTs had 15 seconds.
