One thing not mentioned here is that you can learn a lot about a player's tendencies from watching them on TV! Sounds crazy huh? You see, the camera does not lie. It is a clear unfiltered look at what a player is doing and how they are acting. You can actually learn as much or more about them by watching how they play hands (betting patterns, how they move their chips, body language, etc.) then you can while sitting at the table with them. Once again the camera does not lie!
If you play in major tournaments you are likely at one time or another to be at the same table with some of these players. What you learned by watching them play on TV might actually be quite beneficial to you then. As an aside, did anyone else notice that in the old High Stakes Poker days, Daniel was very talkative when he was bluffing, semi-bluffing or didn't have a strong hand, and was more quiet when he had the goods. The other players picked up on this and beat him up pretty bad. I think he finally wised up.
I know some of you will scoff at me for saying this but that's fine. If you are serious about being the best player you can be and playing against the best players, then you should avail yourself of every opportunity to acquire knowledge about your opposition. I'm not a young man anymore and my best playing days are behind me, but I did okay at poker all my life by paying attention to everything that was available to assist me in being a better player. That included learning how some players will try to cheat or play angles. I've seen it all and then some. I actually got cold decked once in a major Los Angeles area casino, so sh-t happens for sure. One more not so good lesson was when a dealer at a major Vegas card room "helped" out the player to his immediate right. I'll let you figure that one out for yourself. It's not that hard.
I still enjoy a nice little 5-10 NL game from time to time and when I see these young hotshots constantly on the phone while they are not in a hand I love it even more. You can learn more in the hands you don't play then the ones you do. But you should already know that.
