I don't know anyone in real life who watches poker on TV. Poker is a niche hobby though, so it's no surprise. It gets a small subset of very hardcore followers, but it's not popular among the mainstream population in the same way that soccer, tennis or basketball are, for example. The average Joe has definitely heard of names like Messi, Ronaldo, Federer, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, but almost certainly has zero clue who Viktor Blom or Doug Polk are.

One of the highlights of watching poker on TV was watching the hand of Dwan v Phil Ivey.

OTT the dealer flips over the offsuit 5 making Dwan the nizzzles with 67, Ivey making a lower straight with A2 - Ivey knows 100% that Dwan won't be able to put him on that hand.

I think either Jesse May/ Choirboy and RW III nearly explode in their pants, (I watched it on Sky Sports im pretty sure) I was on the edge of the sofa buzzing and even mother (who played free rolls and knew the basics of poker) came and sat and watched the hand unfold.

It was exiting, the commentators were great, the action was quite prompt (no excessive tanking what I remember?) and there's nothing like that these days. Same ppl staring, waiting, tanking, getting READS!! lawl its boring nowadays

Last edited by bgy333; 08-13-2018 at 11:05 PM. Reason: I think ppl tanking wasting time should have hand exposed when all action of that hand completed

Does that include streaming? If so, I still watch quite a bit. If by TV, you literally mean TV, then it's pretty much the Main coverage and that's it.

being on espn is pretty cool, its kind of surprising how often coverage of things is on in bars and whatnot in public, and since we all know every bro out there is amazing at poker, im sure its still somewhat helpful for the game

Yeah me too. I noticed I just didn't watch it for like a year straight so when I moved a few years ago I didn't bother bringing one with me.

I still like it , but it certainly is not "must watch" TV. I sure like it better than Bowling, or Darts, or Pool on TV!

The only TV I watch is Poker! PokerGo, specifically. I haven't gotten too wrapped up with PNIA but they seem to be doing it pretty big these days as well.

If anything with all the new stuff on and streams consumption is definitely up. We just need usa online poker solved and they'll be a mini surge.

Any coverage is good coverage in the sense that it still has the potential to bring new players to the game. Last night, there was poker programming on both CBSSN and NBCSN. And yes, there obviously ARE people who watch or the funds would not be expended to cover production and airtime expenses.

I don't for the Poker Night in America production, but the laid back approach of those games could hook the casual channel surfer.

The NBC coverage was the low-entry 'high roller' stuff from the Aria ($10K mostly but with one or two of the $25K events being shown).

Why anyone would take issue with the mere existence of coverage is beyond me...
