Jennifer Tilly is #1-10.

The next best in the world comes in at 11th.

If skill is defined as the percentage of things that someone knows and does compared to what a smart person could learn and do if their life depended on it there are thousands of chess players, as well as practitioners of many other endeavors that are more skillful than any poker player. Of course no poker player is going to try to achieve that level of skill because of the luck factor you mentioned. (And because even tiny increases in game selection or sucker enticement is more important to try to get better at.)

I think it comes down to what certain time period you're talking about when you say the best poker players in the world.

For example, at the beginning of Rounders you could argue that Teddy KGB is the best in the world since he stacks Matt Damon and becomes the main antagonist and everyone loves to hate on the guy at the top. Then Joey Knish says to Matt that he's a fish but Matt reveals that he bluffed Johnny Chan so obviously Matt > Chan. Then Matt beats Teddy at the end by check check check trapping him. So Matt Damon is the best player in the world (at that time).

Um, what? The intended meaning of this sentence and the broader point you're trying to make are completely lost on me.

Maybe he's saying that poker skills aren't as applicable to other facets of life as other skills people spend a lot of time cultivating? Or something? Something.

I am saying that no one is as skillful at poker as some people are at chess, the 100 m dash, golf, or many other endeavors.

Put differently say there was a billion dollar reward if you got into the top ten in poker skill (given it could somehow be measured). So the whole world was trying. It is likely that none of the top ten would stay up there. And if they did, their skill would be a lot more "immense" than it is now.

That same reward would have a much smaller effect on the top echelon of those other activities. Because there is less room for improvement.

While I agree with your general point, poker has a lower ceiling than many endeavors and it's possible that there is no difference between the best players once a certain skill level is reached. Is chess not close to that point due to AI?

Your point applies to every single field, and as such is pretty much useless because every single field could be better if we applied 10 billion people to it rather than a few million up to a the ceiling point.

yeah sauce is a good shout, i think the best heads up players will ultimately be the best players overall
Personally i think Colman deserves to be in the GOAT discussion, even though OTB, Trueteller may be sliightly better technically, the way Colman is able to figure out what his opponents are doing is just insane and puts him up there for me
