There are only a handful of well off poker players and almost all of them benefitted financially outside of winning. There are no really well off people who are poker players by profession.

It has always been a million to one shot with a relatively low ceiling for success. Never understood the allure of itself other than people wanted to believe they could sit around playing cards and make ridiculous money. Can not happen will not happen. Plenty of people make livings but mostly middle class existences with huge risk of ruin. It is not exactly the ballah life style.

I always would smile when people would make fun of Guy. A guy who can easily afford to lose two hundred thousand on a hand for entertainment playing against some guy who is living or dying on the other side of the bet. Too many people looking up to the wrong side of the table. I feel bad for kids who spent years chasing a dream that was not even real. Was just a put on that others used to make money. Lots of people have made lots of money off poker, just none of it by playing poker.

Anyone that can grind out 75k a year at poker could likely make the same amount in the real world with more upset and less risk. How many poker players that many looked up to are just degens chasing their fix and hoping for that next big score to get them on track.

The majority of everyday pro grinders (i consider that anyone earning 100k+ a year) didn't quit their job to start playing $5 sng's...

Most were casual players who suddenly made 5k+ in 1 month or something, then started playing every spare moment they got, studied the game, won a lot more THEN quit their job/uni after 6 months to a year or so figuring they were making so much they might as well go for it. The difference between u and them is they put the time and effort in, ppl may have natural abilities but hard work is the multiplier.

Its rare u come across Isildurs and Junglemans who made rolls at Maccas, played as high as they could, lost it, then went back to Maccas, lost that roll, back to maccas... That takes serious balls. I agree that only a few players make serious money tho, but thats how it goes in a lot of stuff especially when the potential rewards are high.

I would never advise anyone to drop out of uni like I did, but one they've made 10k or so and they can really say they love the game and could realistically put 50-60 hrs into poker a week if they do decide to go for it (Ur gonna have to put in the hours at the start if u don't have a lot of spare cash lieing around and don't want to wait till u've made 40-50k).

Then I wouldn't discourage them from going part time for a semester to see what they could do, but they cant just laze around and play 3 hours here and there.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

Phil Hellmuth - He started out as a cash player and worked his way up to the highest stake cash tables at his local casino. From there he won enough to start playing big buyin tournaments and the rest is history. He was a "nobody" at one point and through his own hard work and effort he became a success.

Most of the "tv pros" started from nothing, although most of them have something in common and that is a large MTT score.

It's f'd up and it's wrong. I make that much playing poker the last 5 years quite consistently and I highly doubt I would've made even half that at any alternative path I would've taken.

And yeah, I started with $100 and grinded from 1$ sng's and now have played as high as 5000plo.

Time and Place advantage goes to a brief internet period spawning a fast rise of self-made & successful wiz-kids.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

I grinded from 50 dollars and made it up to 2/4. Although I usually played 1/2 HU and 1/2 6max rush. At the beginning of my career, there were 3 seperate occasions where my roll was less than 5 dollars, but I always managed to lukbox in a sit n go. Unfortunately I haven't played poker seriously since BF and most of my money is still trapped on FTP (20k)

Well said, a good dose of reality for all the people living in the illusion.
