Since you've been playing poker how many other jobs have you had?
Second, how much pocket money/expensive things do you have right now because of poker? Just curious.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

I'm not really well known but I've basically grinded my way "up" through real games while consistently grinding my way down shotting a few big MTT's each year.

You can't run much worse than me when it actually matters ($5K+ MTTs), and I'm still around...

You still do a lot of grinding, but you also take shots at big tournaments, or write poker books, or offer coaching, or look for whales way above your normal stakes, or try to get Team Online Pro, etc.

Eventually one of these long-shots hits, and you vault up from being a midstakes grinder into high or nosebleed stakes.

Almost everyone playing high stakes got lucky at some point - the difference between them and guys stuck grinding small-mid stakes is that they worked hard to put themselves in those spots where getting lucky was possible.

you got some good answers bud!

In June 2008 I quit my job as a HS Math teacher to play poker full time.
I own a house in the US and another in Costa Rica. Those are the two most expensive things I own

If you're interested and you google me, you'll be able to find my full story and more stats and charts on my poker career pretty quickly.

The bigger question is, what's the daily volume<->vagina ratio these days? Tough economy.

There are less fish and suckers in poker today, just like an efficient market, the poker world has adjusted itself over time. People are getting better and the suckers are gone so basically there is no new source of money and in the long run money will just be getting exchanged among the same players.
I'm sure he dabbled in more high stakes games than what you've seen on TV. I'd say if he truly held onto his entire score + made a few bucks afterwards and accomplished his realistic $$ related goals, taking care of friends and family for example, then he's one of the smartest major MTT binkers to date. Otherwise, to suggest he grinded up to the type of money where he could accomplish such things is probably untrue.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

The majority of today's high-stakes regs grinded their way up. Those who didn't and binked by playing poker when it was as easy as taking sweets from a baby are either busto or don't play anymore because they realize they suck in today's games.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

I started online in January 2010 with $300 that highlandfox transferred to me. Grinded hard (10k mtt's between both sites) for 16 months, until BF happened. I'm for sure glad I did it this way, in the event I need to do it again someday. No ego for me in dropping down in live or online stakes.

Re: who actually grinded his way up?

Most of the best poker players on Earth have went broke many, many, many times or have been broke to start. Its the nature of the beast. And when I say broke, I dont mean..."Aw shucks, I dont have money to get in that game." I mean "Holy ****, how am I going to eat today?"

Phil Ivey is the hands down the best player on Earth. He used to be a telemarketer. Lol... seriously. Its funny too because he said he was pretty good at it. Haha. Funny but not surprising.

Read the book "Deal Me In." Its a bunch of short stories of 20 top pros stories of their rise and fall and rise, etc. Mini biographys. A very inspiring read.

I won a seat for the $5200 WCOOP main, played the $5200 seat, and then also played one of the WCOOP 1k's and cashed for like 4k or something. This was within a few days of each other so all the activity made for that vertical line.
