there are a lot of people who grinded their way up but you have never heard of them because playing cash is not what gets you famous. also a lot of people who have big tourney scores did grind their way up before those scores. most good players who can win long term at cash eventually take shots in tourneys and since they are good they do well and become famous.

I've always wondered how many of the people playing the highest stakes(cash or high buyin live tournaments) would be there if it weren't for being extremely aggressive(stupid) with their bankroll management and getting lucky.

I think a majority of the people at the highest stakes are there because they are degenerates with their money. A hand full are more committed and/or talented that everyone else. While the rest have the same skillset as a mid/high stakes player but are degenerates and were fortunate.

Re: never a losing month in 9 years? Thats the most unreal thing I've ever heard. Congrats and wtf. I had one year where I won all 12 months that I remember out of 10 years or so. Crazy.

Pretty well documented that Galfond did so. He grinded SNGs while in college and then eventually played the $1k SNGs on Party. By the time he switched to cash, he just jumped in the 5/10 games and never looked back.

Here's the thing: Being very aggressive with your BRM can pay off huge if you're willing and able to accept some big setbacks and back off when things go wrong.

Pretty sure every time I moved up significantly in stakes, it was mostly the result of taking a shot and having it go well. I think a fair number of players fall into one of two extremes - either they never take shots, or they take a shot and if it goes badly, they dust off 80% of their roll before they back down.

It should be no surprise that poker players who are the best at taking well timed risks are the ones pulling in the most cash.
