I certainly wouldn't consider myself a huge name or anything even remotely close to that. But I started out with a $50 deposit on empire poker and a $15 book (and have never had to redeposit).

This June is 9 years, with never having a losing month, biggest downswing being 18.5 buy ins, and I've won over $2mill from hold'em (both limit and NL).

So I guess in some people's mind (myself included) when you say "grind"...I think of the guy playing month after month after month with a low variance constantly winning strategy. Many players have won a lot more then me, but I'm not too sure there's many that can claim never having a losing month over 9 years

John Juanda. Apparently he went along to a local poker club, watched (didn't play) the lowest buyin table for several hours, then went away, bought and read all the poker books he could find and the next week bought in for $100. He built up from there and never went busto (at poker - when he was young he apparently bustoed several times playing blackjack).

You have to quantify success. Is it Private Jets and Monte Carlo?...or is it just never having to clock in or answer to anyone?

I played online previous to black friday...and I play live only recreationally now. I truly think in the live environment with good game selection (serious free manies at 1/2, 2/5 and probably 5/10 live)...good tournament selection (id rather play a donktastic field at the River Series at Winstar or Choctaws big tourney week than face down any name pros just to say I did) a guy or girl could grind out a good living with minimal big swings.

While this is generally accurate you kind of miss the allure of poker. It's not about the $ but the freedom. I could certainly be making much more in the 'real world' but being able to work whenever I feel like and -even more importantly- wherever I feel like is huge. Thanks to poker I've already been able to live the life that most people spend 50 years in their own grind looking forward to one day being able to do. I feel very fortunate for being able to take advantage of what poker had to offer.

Of course that's mostly in the past. Online poker is well beyond its prime and anybody looking to get into the game now a days is setting themselves up for disappointment. But it was never about the money for the vast majority of grinders - it was always the freedom.

What would be interesting is to know what players started grinding micro stakes online and are playing high stakes online or live.
