Just wandering if anyone around here ever read or posted on RGP or pokerpages.

Those were my first two sites that I got info from.

Actually someone used to have a site with old WSOP results and maybe some write-ups, but I can't for the life of me remember the site.

I started on RGP. I think I moved to the cardrunners forum from there.

I started playing on Paradise Poker before they even offered No Limit

I Deposited $450 and was playing limit for a little while and then the news broke that starting that upcoming Friday, they would be introducing NL to the masses.

I went to Chicago for a Dream Theater concert with two of my friends, also Paradise Poker players, and we were excited to get back home and see what "madness" would develop in the world on online No Limit Cash Games.

Back in those days, I think the max tables was three. I would sit down, order myself a hotdog ( Long Live the Hot Dog Brigade! ) and start my session.

Playing with all the usual players like Gavrilo, Pope Rek, Elbagio, Hanswurst, Billiards, Puddingpris, Scott Texas, JDChance, Franchise, BaBaBoo, oldman ( I think that was his name ) and a slew of others......the games were so good.

I remember eventually running my roll up to $4400 and a friend of mine would tell me how I would never, ever see that money when it came to cashing out. Now remember, this was one of the first online poker sites and this was all new to me. I had no fear, I was 100% confident that I would get my money ( naive? )

Anyway, I made w withdraw of $2400 and the Fed Ex envelope arrived in 2-3 days! I copied that check, like a trophy and then took it to my bank. Same friend, then said, it would never clear.....waited, it cleared and then same friend, was now depositing onto Paradise Poker LOL. Sup " Tic Tac "

So I played there 100 NL, 200 NL Fullring (6 max eventually also made its way to Paradise but I was, at the time, strictly a fullring player )

Near the end, I even remember sitting with this new guy, Durrr and thinking ( this guy is fn crazy! Yet, he always was sitting on huge stacks and eventually played the 500NL ( or was it 600 NL....I forget ) I never played that game, so hard for me to recall. The guy was ahead of his time imo, looking back at when this was all going down.......epic.

Paradise Poker was also so much fun to play at. I had a couple times where players would stall to time out, when they were facing usually a huge river bet by me :P At this time, the default on the software was that the hand just went showdown and these players would be able to have a chance at the pot, without ever having to pay the big bet on the river. This sounds CRAZY by todays standards, but that was how it was.

I had to write, perhaps 2-3 times, to support.....I would have records of people who I had seen previously do this, and I would have it dated, etc etc...and so when it happened to me, I would fire off an email to support, with what happened in my hand PLUS the other situation I had witnessed between them and another player and Paradise Poker went 3/3 and always rewarded me what I would have won. This is just OUTSTANDING! Of course, I know they also did their investigation, before awarding me, but it was common sense. Made me very happy and I felt very safe playing there.

They also had these great Bowling shirts.....Black and White vertical striping, would say "Paradise Poker" on the breast pocket and have all the suits underneath the logo....then the back of the shirt, was the same but much larger. I remember getting one and I loved it so much, i wrote them back to see if they would send me a couple more " for my bowling friends " and they did, all three shirts....FREE! Again, now that is a website!! They also would randomly send you mouse pads with there logo, hats, key chains and I even had this pen ( I just remembered it, forgot all about it ) that was sweet.

You would turn it and flip it, and it had this picture of a poker table, and when you tilted the pen, the flop would appear ( it was like floating in water, so when you moved the pen, this piece would go from one end of the pen to the other, and reveal the board of a hand )

Eventually, they went more toward the sport book and I found myself playing FTP, UB, Pokerstars, etc etc....and slowly they just went away and I no longer went there.

I miss those times but it is great to see just how much the game has evolved since that era.

Thanks for this post OP....good time going down memory lane of where it all began.

Cool post ^^ I started on Bugsy 2006. Never been happier at poker than trying to grind enough points to get a free $10 and avoiding depositing real money on such an obv rigged concept “online poker”
Never made it, deposited $50 a week instead. Started winning after the 5th deposit.....ohhhh. So it’s NOT rigged? Lightbulb moment. Discover stars and party. Huge amount of grinding ensued until ~2011

Are you sure they were simply stalling? I don't think any sites allowed this, but they did allow it if they disconnected, which might have looked the same on your end. Of course there were people who abused this and disconnected intentionally in a situation like you're describing. Sites allowed it because Internet connections could still be pretty spotty then and they didn't want to penalize players for that, but the abuse became more common; first sites had "no disconnect protect" tables, and then they started doing away with disconnect protect altogether.

Used to love Paradise bonuses. I remember they ran some where they had different bonus codes that were numbered sequentially, so if you got one, you could figure out what the others were and deposit for them all, and they stacked with some great multipliers.

Started offering poker online in March, 2001. I was concerned about possible cheating and credit card fraud/chip dumping, so we asked these two guys named Sklansky and Malmuth to create some algorithms to enable our site to highlight unusual returns or play given particular starting hands.

(I had played live in Las Vegas and Chicago as far back as 1971 and followed poker on 2+2 before my online poker venture. I first played online on Paradise because they let me smoke a cigar and drink at the table.)

2004
had some friends tell me i should try online poker bc i was good with numbers liked probability etc.
out of almost annoyance i threw 500 bucks online

back then there were easy to clear bonuses out the ass so i moved money from neteller to different sites to whore all of the bonuses. i remember literally one tabling .5/1 limit with lee jones's book in my lap.
i remember seeing my friend playing 25 dollar nl on party (as in 25 dollar buy in ) and thinking he's insane for potentially losing 25 bucks on one hand !

2004 was a long long time ago.

Stars freeroll 2010, got 2nd out of a few k people and was hooked. Found FTP and played there for awhile until I found Absolute Poker (smart man I am) and mostly played there because it seemed easier. Ran up some money there and moved back to FTP(even smarter) in December of 2010. Ran hotter than I've ever ran since without having much of a clue and then RIP FTP 6 months later.

Immediately went to Merge and the rest is history. Oh to go back in time....

Who talks about Paradise Poker in such detail without mentioning the variety of virtual food products and drinks you could order at the table! Very tasty on those limit tables that were the most popular back then.

Here is another "remember the good old days" thread, however it was created in 2010, which safe to say would be considered the great old days today.

As to the OPs question, I formed a bonus whoring team in about 2005 (mainly casino, though some poker). None of the people in it liked gambling, which made it work a lot better.

I started with play money at Bugsy's Club and freerolls on Stars in 03. For real money, I started at Pacific back when they had only limit, 15/30 were the highest stakes, and they had no MTT's at all.

fun fact for me: I won their very first MTT. It was limit, of course. A $100 on Valentine's day in 04 for $16xx.

I started on RGP, that place was a trip that ultimately turned into a madhouse without moderation

IIRC, there's some funny posts there from Negreanu, Lederer, Annie Duke, etc

I started playing at Planet Poker and damn that was some easy money especially considering it was limit poker and I suck at limit.

Exactly...they would disconnect from the client on purpose....that is why I would make notes on them ( On index cards because EARLY in Paradise days, you could not even make a note on a player through the client :P ) So I would have these cards and if the time came for me to contact support, I would explain what happened in my hand and also say " Also, I witnessed this player do this in a hand on April X, XXXX and also once in June XX...." So they knew there was a track record of disconnects WHEN they were in a position where they had to call a large bet to see a showdown.

Those Bonuses were awesome! Yes, they would stack and it was like SunnyDays1, SunnyDays2, etc etc.....those were the good old days

Not me my friend...if you look at my post, I said that I would order myself up a hotdog and then start playing. I always had a hot dog sitting on my table when I was playing...sometimes, we would get the whole table to order them, so every player had a hot dog and we called it " The Hot Dog Brigade " :P

Started on PlanetPoker sometime in the summer of '98. No porblem sending money or cashing out back then. Played a lot of 3/6 limit. Don't remember NL being offered. I wasn't a great player but still won consistently enough till I got drunk one Saturday & tilted off my whole bankroll.

Good Times.

cool thread.

party poker ~2002

deposit $100. run it up to ~$500 playing limit, small 36man SNG's , or anything else

Then immediately move up in stakes $100 SNGs, $5/10 limit.... always quick path to busto. Bankroll mgmt was not a thing yet

Lather, rinse, repeat. Never cashed out but absolutely loved it.

One night entered a small (~$40) satellite into a mega for 25K WPT Championship seat at Bellagio. Won my seat to the mega , then BINKED a seat in that with two others in phase 2.

So there I was playing the WPT 25K at Bellagio. ABSOLUTELY no idea what I was doing. Somehow made it pretty deep into day 2, but around 10 before the money. I was on button, mid position raised, cutoff 3 bet (both had me covered). Being the noob that I was , decided that shipping it with AQ was the right thing to do (probably had 25BBs). Rem that back then a 3 bet actually meant something.

Didn't end well for me, but was awesome experience and was hooked from them on.

PS. rem for a time was sitting to the left of phil gordon. We started chatting and he was telling about this new site he was working on where you could play online with alot of the known pros. I thought it sounded pretty dumb at the time.

not just that but the chat came on the table (kind of comic book style)
so you would see someone suck out followed by "how could you call me you lucky cock sucker" go across the table

good times

I first played online poker in 2002 on WSEX. They were mostly known as a sports book, I heard about them, and I thought (incorrectly) that I was good at handicapping college hoops. So I sent them $250. I then saw that they offered Poker. I thought to myself, this HAS to be rigged; it’d probably be just me and 8 robots playing— it’s a scam and I’ll lose my money for sure.

But I liked Poker, so I thought, of the 250, I’ll dedicate $50 to Poker, and the rest I’ll run up betting sports. Well I quickly lost the $200 sports betting money, but the $50 in Poker money became about $2500 in a few weeks. It wasn’t that hard as the games were easy and there were great promotions like aces cracked, high hands, etc. Then I requested a check for about $1800. I had my doubts, but sure enough, it came, it cleared, and I’m still hooked on the game.

Got in the top ten in the world for zynga poker back in 2008. People would send me links on facebook trying to scam me for my chips. I didn't fall for it. Figured I would crush when I started playing real money. Started short stacking $1/$2 just waiting for premium hands and shoving all in. Made a few thousand but always preferred mtts.

Started in my friend's garage when I was 17. Frequented home games and regularly won until I stopped getting invited to home games. Deposited on Full Tilt and Pokerstars and lost my deposit on MTTs. Deposited again and focused on SNGs until I built up a healthy roll. I realized I loved the live play even though it wasn't as profitable. Cashed out from Tilt and Stars so I can focus on live play. Been playing live ever since.

RGP yes. My first strategy stuff I studied seriously was 'Theory of Sucking Out' by Abdul, anyone remember that?

Proudly wore my Planet Poker T-shirts.

But my bonus whoring was all blackjack. Deposit, run enough min bet plays to clear it, next. Easy money, if you didn't mind grinding a ****load of $2 blackjack hands.

My credit union asked where I was getting all these offshore checks, lol

The guy I learned from recommended cover play, to keep from soiling the bed regarding the bonuses.

I played quarter 9/6 JoB video poker at max bet.

Hit my only royal ever. $1200 win on $1.25 bet. Good times.

Only other memory worth mentioning is the implosion of Neteller and the mass shift to Paypal for online gambling funding.
