Any time i've seen him in a televised cash game, it's pretty clear the money in front of him is always a lot of money to him. Even way back on HSP when he was playing against Hellmuth, Hellmuth admitted he made a bluff with 72 vs. Mikes KK because he knew Mike didn't have much money and couldn't rebuy so he would be scared money with KK and probably fold, which he did.

I used to check his twitter every so often and there were a few pics on there of him with prostitute looking girls in his hotel room but the looks on the girls faces were of the "why is this old creepy guy taking pictures of us?" variety. Those pics have since been deleted and all his twitter is now seems to be a plugs for his brother's stock tips website.

I think Mike is a good example of the dark side of Poker Daniel Colman was talking about.
I agree on a lot of this , but there's a cardplayer article from 06/7 in which he states that he has $2mill liquid and "can borrow a few hundred k on his house ", insinuating he has a lot of equity in it, but it just amazes me how people can squander their money on complete ****.

you're right, the book is One of a Kind. that movie title stuck in my head for some reason.

the thing that tilted me the worst about that movie is there are so many made-for-Hollywood stories in that book and they left out almost every single one of them.

the first 2 hours he was in Vegas, his deal counteroffer HU in the championship bridge tournament, registering for the bridge tournament the next year lol, and especially when he got betting advice from the horse racing handicapper are all so perfect for a movie about gambling.

it would have been such a great opening scene with him all disheveled sitting in the race-book with a mountain of betting slips sweating those races.

+1

tbh I have very little sympathy for Matusow. He has being given/earned countless opportunities to quit poker and retire with enough money but kept going back to the lions den.

I never have and never will be in a similar financial situation as a result of gambling; Whilst my default thought process when someone destroys themselves through any addiction is " what are you doing where is your self-control ", I have never been in a similar situation and as such I hesitate to judge him, or anyone else with a d gambling problem. I also do not judge him because as far as I know, he is not hurting anyone else with his gambling problems, and he is probably well aware of the opportunities that he's wasted.

I really don't like threads like these in general whereby people talk **** about others who they don't know whatsoever, I actually came in thinking he was solvent but this is reminiscent of a bunch of suburban house-wives gossiping at a ****ing nursery.

Fair point. And my prior post only has merit if he's complaining of where he's at.

Honestly with his past and age I was just thinking that he is most likely gonna be dead in the next 10 years unless he turns things around if he was still living like he was and from your post it sounds like he's still on that track. Sad the dude seems like a very likeable guy and I always rooted and enjoyed him.

He's been banging cocktail waitresses two at a time. The players can't even get their drinks.

Mike Matusow has always looked unhealthy. Being overweight and a Vegas lifestyle can do that to you. I wouldn't assume how his life is going based on his appearance though.

I could imagine Matusow being under someones wing and just restraining himself these days. He seemed to be pretty resolved on an easier life after that NBC HU win but who knows gamblers hey.

I hope he's doing well. When I first started watching poker, I found him entertaining. Years later, he still is. Seems like a good guy who had some issues, but who hasn't. He's been pretty open about his past struggles. I think he's good for the game. It's easy to knock him but hopefully he's doing well and is in a good place.

He's like those athletes you see that piss it all away and you think "if only I had that talent". But I give him credit. Through it all, he gets back up. Tough road in a tough profession.

The Stu Unger book is great, the movie starring Michael Imperioli ( Christopher in The Sopranos ) is too sugar coated, it's just OK.

But there is a Stu Unger documentary that is the real deal, pulls no punches. Brutal.

Btw I know I pokes fun at the mouth in this thread too, but I've played with Shaun Deeb in tournaments before and if I see him again I'm tank-waiting for the clock to get called slow rolling on the 59th second the first chance I get. Slow rolling on TV and laughing it up just makes you look like a giant *******.

So you're gonna waste the time of the 7 others at the table because you saw the one other guy slowroll someone he knew that one time on tv?

At risk of continuing too far down the derailed track, I have to agree. It's a shame, too — the show would be fine without the creepy/unfunny host guy and all the side shenanigans (e.g. watching someone drive a golf ball 50 feet). I like that it's a cash game, I like that they largely chose players who can and do ham it up for television, and I like that they have traveled around to some less-known stops to play poker. That should have been good enough for a solid poker TV show.

Okay, I'm done. Back to the originally scheduled conversation... I want to hear how good a friend Matusow is to Vegan again.

The show would have been cool 7 years ago, making a TV poker show these days is a hard nut to crack i usually get bored within 15 minutes

Party Poker Premier League has been some of the best televised poker in recent memory. It's made me realize what TV poker has been missing is Phil Laak as a commentator.

I like that they're doing a new poker show but there's nothing about this that really makes me want to watch it. The mix of players is mediocre. PAD and HSP had great lineups. There is no commentator. HSP had Gabe Kaplan and ESPN has Norman Chad, Pokerstars has Stapes. The stakes are high but after seeing the high stakes on HSP and PAD then it doesn't seem as interesting. The graphics are weird and kind of ugly.

I guess the poker shows from years ago did everything way better than this show so it's just kind of disappointing. Like there was a high tech lost civilization in the past with flying cars and laser guns, and now these guys are on horseback with swords and bows.

The intro song makes me want to shoot myself, but HTP with Maria Ho is pretty damn good.
