I think the tax rules are clearer in the UK - no tax at all on poker winnings. It isn't that clear cut in Oz. That said if you are a US citizen once you win over $80k (or whatever the current exemption for overseas earning is) the IRS will be after you for a chunk.

Oz is OK but pretty racist and culturally desolate outside Sydney and Melbourne (which are not cheap cities to live in). The UK has the advantage of proximity to the rest of Europe and cheap flights to everywhere. London to Moscow is the same distance as Sydney to Perth I think (and Moscow is a bit more interesting than Perth).

I think for EU citizens who are poker pros from a country where you have to pay tax on poker winnings moving tax residency to the UK is a no-brainer - free healthcare, no tax on any income and double tax treaty with US so no deductions from any big MTT wins in the States etc.

I know a lot of the younger kids go off to third world countries and 'balla' it up there grinding the $100 and $200 tables (and if you are at that level then you have to do that as you won't win enough to 'balla it up' in a world city like London or Sydney), so if you are that sort of pro you may well end up in S. America , Eastern Europe, Thailand or the Philippines etc. which I'm sure is fun for a year or two..

If you do make A LOT of money playing online poker, Monaco would be the best place in the world to 'officially' live. Like most people who 'officially' live in Monaco you won't spent more than a month per year in your 5 million euro appartment the size of a bathroom, but you will save a lot of money paying taxes.

was about to post this. Vancouver is very nice but the cost of living is soooo high, especially real estate.

toronto and Montreal are much nicer. Montreal is the cheapest but the quality of living is high.

My parents live in Italy, but we weren't a long drive away from Ljubljana. Do you have anything to contribute regarding living in Slovenia? How much money a month allows you to live in a nice, safe neighborhood, etc?

Also, I average close to $50/hr, in case that helps give insight on where I should/shouldn't live.

Why not just live in the country you currently live in and only remit your winnings somewhere with no taxes? Use CCs, etc.

Wtf?? Barcelona is definitely in the top 5 of the coolest cities in Europe... Great nightlife, beautiful architecture, hot women, great climate, beaches, Ibiza is less than an hour away...

My best mate just got back from three months there. He hated it. He said the place was just full of ****s and hookers. He was staying in a top swanky apartment with his uberrich uni buddy too.

I stayed at Las Ramblas for a few days. I don't remember any beaches. I remember all the african hookers and the big birds with cramped wings in little cages. I remember the dudes who buy beers during the days for 33 cents and try to sell them to you at 3am, warm for 2 euros. The beautiful cathedral is a great place to get chewed off for 20 euros. No one ever cleans up dog turds ever. The climate is good, though. Warm but not too hot.

I did turn up there with no clue or plan, but never saw a redeeming feature in those few days. Couldn't even see a bullfight.
