who would agree to play that? It's basically poison to games. And wcg obv does not stand a chance since his edge comes from understanding and exploiting human strategies, and in this case, if claims are true, he would have to play his approximation to NE against way better approximation. Obvious who would win here.

Who the hell cares whether you guys think it's a good idea or not. "WCG gonna hurt his bottom line IMO.. What possible motivation do these two have for doing this? Only gonna give up free info"

Obviously WCG and his crew have thought of every possible thing you low level scrubs have already thought of (pros and cons) and came out deciding that its +ev in whatever way so they're going to do it

So throw your garbage low level 1 analysis of the effects of this event taking place out the window and stop posting

So Claudio is poker's Deep Blue. If anyone can get Microsoft to sponsor this one (the way IBM wanted to beat Kasparov so much), poker will be dead in 2-3 years.

And before anyone say "poker will never be solved", that's what people say about chess 20 years ago. And guess what, little engine in my ****ty notebook now beat Deep Blue running in supercomputer 100% of the time.

I don't think will be anything close to promoting bots in poker. I think if done right and spun correctly, this will be more about science and technology and computing as a whole.

It's not like when Deep Blue came in the scene in Chess, or Watson for Jeopardy came on that everyone thought ****, bots in Chess and trivia games. It's more what this computational technology can do for mankind, and if the story is told that way I think it would be a net positive for poker.

Put computing to solve issues of water and world hunger then. Bots playing great online players in NL is terrible for the game and the future of it. The bots will learn significantly from this. That is not good for anyone who loves the game except the ones who have access to the code or share what it thinks with their friends.

Lol holdem

A computer can beat top players. Totally the game we should be raking the **** out of real poker games to fund.

I'm not sure why Nolan has removed the press release from his website (bandwidth issues maybe?) but I presume the event is still going ahead.

I don't know what sample size will be used, but unless the bot turns out to be much weaker than advertised, I think variance will have a major effect on results. I wouldn't be surprised if Claudico wins two games and loses two, with fairly wide differences in winrates. (Tartanian 7 completed crushed the field in the last computer bot competition, but had some sick downswings over a large sample size).

As to the ramifications of the results, it really depends how the media spins it. If the bot crushes everyone, it could be spun as "There's still money in poker, humans aren't solid".

Its a great idea, because they can still beat the damn thing and do the human race a favour. (Atleast thats what they are thinking) And these man vs machine matches are inevitable so lets get it on right now.

In a few years there might be no point cause there could 20+ NLH poker bots beating the crap out of any human.

It would be more entertaining if the bot could trash talk.. maybe in the voice of Tony G. Or just have Tony G. their live to do the trash talking.

incomprehensible that top players have an intellectual interest in the game of nlhu and would like to be a part of the very exciting march towards ever closer to GTO strategies, just disregarding the very small if any effects on their bottom line

i for one don't get it

The issue is, and in history it tends to work out this way, is that we make substantial strides in technological advancement by chasing things that the average person may think is useless or frivolous.

Many people think the moon landing, space exploration is a waste of time, they always ask, why don't we spend that X dollars on xyz project etc etc. The issue is when we chase things that are "frivolous" we make a lot of discoveries along the way that benefit our daily lives. The moon landing spawned the early technology that would give us satellite navigation, ear thermometers, non reflective displays, smoke detectors, and more.

Watson is doing the same thing, scientists at IBM initially started the project with the goal of using it to play Jeopardy, because they wanted a computer that could answer questions posed to it in natural language. Now that they have proven they could do that with the Jeopardy results, they are now making available the hardware/software to other people so that they may adapt Watson to solve other problems, problems that are way more complex niche in scope, such as finance, legal research, telecom, and healthcare/education development when compared to the initial problem of answering trivia questions.

With regards to good/not good for the game, I don't think that's a point in trying to put the genie in the bottle. People will always try to see if they can build a computer to outsmart another computer, it's been done in Chess with DeepBlue. People will apply it in Poker, and the Poker community can either sit on the sidelines and just watch, or they can be a part of it and ensure that these competitions and the resulting technology will be used for good.
