Poker is a scene for social losers lol. UGH!
These rationalizations from people who can't compete anymore always make me chuckle. Grow up!

And as a side note, a ton of people at the top in the HS world are fascinatingly interersting. Sure a disproportionate % of them are on the bottom end on the extraversion spectrum. That's hardly surprising. People who are extraverted won't enjoy the process/do what's necessary to become great at poker.

I take it you see a GM at chess or most brilliant artists and creative people as weird incels who lack socail skills etc. Good take.

So you're ok with the fact Krantz was colluding with Dani and the others to figure out his tell?

Besides maybe Ivey and Antonius, which of the old school pros were ever all that "cool" by your standards?

Terrible take and at least use the impression correctly.

It would be barely ever talked to humans let alone women. The rarer thing goes second when saying this. But I'm guessing you could [sic] care less, right?

I also think people who achieve things are huge nerds, as they devote 40+ hours a week to what they get good at, for 5 years or more on end.

Also I'm a huge failure in comparison. You win some, you lose some.

I played with Viffer quite a bit before the pandemic at Encore, including several HU mixed game matches starting very late at night until the sun came up the next day. For the most part, he was always very cordial and seemed like he was just trying to take a low variance route to making some money and providing for his family.

Over the handful of sessions we played, I spoke with him several times about topics including the infamous die in a grease fire line from 2M2M as well as why he was playing so low (We usually played 20/40-40/80 mixed), and it always seemed more like he was just happy to be playing cards than desperately trying to climb back to nosebleeds. I definitely was not a spot and him playing me was not a super +EV use of his time, so I think it was just a poker player playing poker.

After all, "broke" is a relative term. Several times I saw him with a decent amount of chips, so maybe everyone needs to just relax with the judgment.

It’s sad and all too human (unfortunately) that people care about others finances or take delight in the idea Viffer (or anyone) is broke. But schadenfreude is a very real thing. I always enjoyed watching Viffer play on TV. He seemed like a character and a real gambler.

Iirc there was some controversy around his involvement with the Durr/jungle challenge, so criticisms there might be legit. But who gives a **** if he’s broke (which I doubt). It says a lot more about people who care than it does about him. The real goal is happiness, not money. But, sure, more money is nice.

Sry, end rant.

How good that you're here, now every professional poker player doesn't have to respond.

viffer seems like a happy go lucky type of good person. he did make a big mistake in gambling with the top pro pool players and top pro card players and not selecting his games very carefully. or gambling within his bankroll or managing it when things went downhill. hope he learned his lessons.
and hope all others here that gamble can learn from that as well.

Do we know this? Did he lose a lot playing high stakes or just wasn't winning much and decided it would be better to go back to mid stakes?

I recall a podcast from awhile back that featured an interview with a top pool hustler/player that shared a story of taking Viffer for high 6 figures, possibly 7 figures. So yea, confirmed (wrt to the pool playing, at least).

Oh, so he lost his bankroll to a pool hustler and had to move down to mid stakes.
