Seemed like the same dude from tv.
I played with Viffer quite a bit before the pandemic at Encore, including several HU mixed game matches starting very late at night until the sun came up the next day. For the most part, he was always very cordial and seemed like he was just trying to take a low variance route to making some money and providing for his family.
Over the handful of sessions we played, I spoke with him several times about topics including the infamous die in a grease fire line from 2M2M as well as why he was playing so low (We usually played 20/40-40/80 mixed), and it always seemed more like he was just happy to be playing cards than desperately trying to climb back to nosebleeds. I definitely was not a spot and him playing me was not a super +EV use of his time, so I think it was just a poker player playing poker.
After all, "broke" is a relative term. Several times I saw him with a decent amount of chips, so maybe everyone needs to just relax with the judgment.
