i think averagge to bad players sense the better players always prefer to play shorter handed thus not knowing why there is a skill advantage but understanding it does exist deter them from playing short... also i think when limit hold em was profitable and more popular playing blinds in a 6 max game vs a full ring u can really sense the skill edge as people will bust stacks much quicker and it carried over to nl

Yarbles above me pretty much got it.

Also, fr nits dont feel comfortable when the game gets fast and they have to react, they would rather wait for their big hands without paying blinds etc and not have to worry about being bvb, blinds vs button/co, button vs co etc. all the time

From a players perspective I prefer 10 handed over 9 as in a live game it takes longer for the game to break and the game lags less if multiple people stand up. Thoughts?
the current table layout simply doesn't allow for it comfortably. redesign the tables and you can play 10 handed if you like action oriented family pots.

and yes, I have played ten handed on a nine handed table... it's all arseholes and elbows.

not sure if serious, but i recently to talked about that with a live cardroom manager.

shorthanded games are more profitable for the casino than full ring games, since they get more tables running with the same number of players.
the problem is that all the regulars (mostly fish) say that a game with less than 8 players is not a real poker game. he (the card room manager) doesnt think this will change any time soon, since most of their clientele is old guys (the young guys usually prefer short handed).

he also tried to introduce 4-color decks at some point, but again the customers didnt like it.

10 handed tables are annoying because the seats are closer together and difficult to display hud stats without covering up player name or stack size. 9 handed simply has more empty space around the table.

Obviously depends on how well and how fast you adjust to the differences between live FR and online FR (or online 6 max to live FR, or w/e).

As someone who usually played tournaments, I always got extremely frustrated by the fact that low limit live cash players called with such a wide range preflop, no matter where the raise came from or for how much. Once I adjusted to the type of play you usually see at low limit FR cash, it's slow and can be dull but I find it basically enjoyable, and usually come out ahead.

I think you basically have to remember that low level cash players usually just want to have some fun and there is very little rhyme or reason to what they are doing or why they are doing it. Obviously if you run into a competent player at those levels you have to adjust accordingly.

It doesn't annoy me nearly as much in live cash as it does in live tournaments.

In tournaments its a huge deal, but none of the live fish or tournament directors seem to understand why. Particularly because antes are very big in many live tournaments. Combined with 10 handed play late in the tournament you end up with a situation where there is little play because hand values are so messed up because of the antes and the fact the table is 10 handed.

It devolves tournaments into a contest to see who can get the best hand. Its exponentially harder to find spots where you have fold equity short in tournaments that are 10 handed.

There is no room to be comfortable on a 10 handed table. Especially at my casino, where they have cup holders built in the cushion on the table. The 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, & 10 seats aren't too bad. Hell, the chairs don't even fit with the 4-7 seats. Ridiculous.

I was under the impression that the opportunity cost of using floor space to fit less players and having to keep extra dealers around to run these games made then less profitable than FR. But I also have no access to any of the data the cardroom managers do.

This. I played my first live tourney in a few years a month or so ago, was quite impressed with the structure etc until we went from 5 8 handed tables to 4 10 handed tables, just as the antes were getting big. My reasonably sized 3bet all in stack soon became (call) all in or fold.

That, and the fact that 10 handed is unbelievably dull. 10 handed limit is the absolute worst.

I do quite like SNG's that start 10 handed though as opposed to 9. Doesn't seem to change much and the prize pool is a bit bigger.

In hell, the only poker is 10 handed limit and the 9 other players are fumble-fingered old men who BS with their buddies for 20 minutes before making their pre-move decision. And then they suck out on you.

I play 6-max online and it is my favorite form of teh pokerz but live it is so dull because there is no action and little chance of a big pot. At my casino you raise and then just collect the big blind (as the casino takes the sb). Repeat 20x and by then an hour has past and the table is breaking up even more. It would be more interesting live if they increased the blinds and antes forcing the players to play rather than the boring nitfest that is live poker.

BTW, 10 handed sucks even online. The only way I'm playing that is if my only other option is to play 22 handed Tennessee Hold Me.
