Also I play a decent amount at the Venetian and every time I sit at one of their 10 handed games someone always says something negative about it being 10 instead of 9 handed
I can't speak regarding your homegame, but if you play a lot in casinos, you should realize that there are always people there (at least at low and mid-stakes; I've never played higher) who want something, anything, to complain about. There are just a lot of miserable people in the poker room. If the game is 10-handed, they think it should be 9-handed. If the game is 9-handed, god help you if somebody's walking. If the game is loose, they're always getting sucked out on. If the game is tight, they can't get paid off on anything. They're not really complaining about playing 10-handed, they're just complaining because the Venetian is doing something different, and that makes for a target.
Does it actually make a difference? As others have pointed out, there's a finite amount of room around the poker table, so 9-handed is always better from that standpoint. Otherwise, I don't think it matters much.
