I consider myself a recreational player and have called myself a "Rec" on these boards. But that doesn't mean I don't take the game seriously. A casual player would strike me more as one of those guys who plays once in a blue moon and then corners you at a party with a convoluted bad beat story when he finds out you play every week.

A pro makes a living off of or a sizable portion of their yearly income comes from playing.

From what I understand, someobe is a "pro" at any profession, if they are making a living off of it.
Yes, there are Poker pros who go busto and loose, but they are trying to make a living off of it! (Just like a business owner who might end up broke)
"Rec" is someone who doesn't play poker professionally and has other sources of income.
I just hate when people refer to a rec (or a fish..) as an idiot!
No he is not! He is good enough in his job to make money and spend it on his hobby which is poker!
As long as it's not offensive , any term will do

A true "rec", by definition, is participating in poker as an "activity done for enjoyment when one is not working".

The key inference from this definition is that recs are not expecting to make money from poker. Occasionally they will turn a profit, but over the long-run they expect to lose money and accept this as the cost for their enjoyment.

A serious part-time player such a myself, however, does it for both enjoyment and profit. I dedicate some of my "working time" to poker, not just my leisure time. By definition, therefore, I'm not a rec, but not a pro either (since most of my income comes from part-time professional engineering consulting).

I'm happy to be termed a "reg" rather than a "pro".

And I see nothing wrong with defining "recs" for what they are, as many themselves will admit to being so (i.e. losing players).
The trouble is that people such as yourself and people such as xyz who have never studied/ been on twoplustwo, and go to their local card room to play 1/2, drink a few beers and mostly lose, are both labelled "recs"

I don't think people who play seriously for profit (whether part-time or full-time) should be labelled "recs"

Well not according to Zpaceman, who called himself a Reg not a Rec. Seems fine to me.

IMO Rec / Reg / Pro have enough distinction between them. don't really see that this OP is an important issue

Haha and then they update that they are 'running bad' and then you never heard from them again

I have no idea why some posters think this is about someone's feelings.

Joey's term "fun player" is about a playing style, I think?

OP doesn't understand that "rec player" is a nicety coming from the current era. We don't wanna call people donks, fish, idiots, weak spots, marks, targets, ect, ect. Before online poker it was just calling a weak player basically a slur. Now we understand that people that donk off money in poker are usually winners at life in other areas.

Calling someone a "recreational player" is a status symbol in my opinion. It means they can make a living not having to take a card game seriously. I say hope to be a "rec" cuz that's when your life is looking up!!

^^^ nah, I don't really care if it's meant to be nice or not.

I think it's disingenuous because in the context it is mostly mean it to imply "that player is different than me."

honestly, y‘all can‘t be that stupid and not realize the irony of threads like these. the way to go is to not talk about fish and not to talk about how to talk about fish.

what‘s up the the trump post at #5, how does that not get deleted?

We play the game regularly = Reg. They play the game recreationally = Rec

wtf is the difference?

why is it disingenuous to call someone a Rec to imply that the "player is different to me", but not disingenuous if you call them a casual player?

surely this thread is done

yeah, we should change the term back to "fish." I'm sure players who don't play professionally enjoy being likened to a dumb animal being hunted in the wild

Little bit of a mis-assertion of my posts Lou, but as you continued your sentence you kind of made my point anyway.

Can Pro players have losing stretches? Of course they can. I was talking about Losing Players, not players having losing stretches.

I think "casual player" is a better, more accurate term as it distinguishes between casual and serious players.

We take the game seriously, they take the game casually.

I see a rec always as a losing player longterm who doesnt take money out of the game.

You see a lot of players calling themselves recreationals in all the suggestion threads but they take the game somewhat seriously. Since they play only on few days/occasionally they think the games should be focused around them. They just dont accept the fact that even if you only play from time to time but are still good enough to beat the games even slightly you are not much better for the site than every other reg.

I'm a rec because I have a full time job outside of poker, but i'm also a reg. Sometimes I'm a donkey. I don't mind what you call me.

sorry for mis-assertion.

Just of curiosity, whats the max time period (in months) a player can be down before he can no longer be considered a "pro".
View: stop using "rec player" as a description Quote

As long as a player is supporting himself on his winnings, even if they are currently on a downswing, they qualify as a Pro.

I mean, you can tell me Ivey is down for the past year and I’m not going to claim he’s now a fun player.

But if I told you I was a professional singer, but I mostly do open mics and I’ve only had one paying $50 gig in the past two years, you’d think I’m more of an “aspiring” professional singer.

Ultimately though, you can’t divide up a huge range of players into two neat categories, and Pro works about as well as anything.

Not sure what your point is in the second paragraph, but I can assure you that there are thousands of "Recs," (ie recreational players and non pro's,) that are winning players. I confirmed this by thinking about it.
