Re: View: Starcraft 2 is going to put a small dent in online poker

never played SC, but i would try SC2, if only my PC wasn't 4 years old. i guess it's curse and blessing in same time - i can't enjoy playing modern PC games, but it doesn't take away time i devote to poker.

oh yeah and waiting for Diablo 3!

you would be surprised at how many poker players played starcraft and are heading for starcraft 2...check out the video game forum and see the starcraft 2 subforum.

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/181/starcraft-2/
i think 5% of poker players is a good estimate of the number that will spend a good amount of time on starcraft within the next 4 months. another thing is that a high ratio of those 5% of poker players are probably breakeven/winning poker players.
anyways, game is sick imo

e.g. Fisheye, Nazgul, Ret, Twisted, etc etc.
they were pretty famous in the european scene, but never really "pros" per say. i mean they were winning every national tournament but there was not reaal money involved besides the occasional 5k at WCG national finals.
at the world finals, usually the koreans made the money.

i do think that these players will play sc2, but not as obsessive as they used to do. elky openly admitted it, that he still plays sc 2 on occasion and will play sc2.

the thing is, you either are of competitive nature or you are not, and all of these players are. thats what drove them to excell at poker. in order to own at SC2 you need to play 24/7 so i doubt it will hold them off for too long.

i did play myself a lot, made it once to wcg and i will play sc2. but i know how it will turn out. you play, you get beaten up and then realize the young kids just have too much time on their hands that u cannot compete with them. niiiiiiiicce!!

lets just grind and finish our studies D=

Re: View: Starcraft 2 is going to put a small dent in online poker

odin is speaking the truth, im a ex high level gamer and i would never ever go back to FPS-games again unless i am dedicating myself to it, cba getting eaten up by a bunch of randos just because they play a fair bit more than me.

However, i never competed in sc, and i feel that i can successfully be a scrub in sc2 by that same reason then since rts and fps games are so different so no ego here.

If the ex sc hardcorers go slackermode in sc2 and play for funs/lols/kicks with friends in 3v3 etc they will be able to put in the hours in le pokers just fine.

If they can't, they will not be diving into sc2 that much. It sucks to be a nobody after being on the top of the world so to speak.

Can someone help me out here. The only big strategy game I have played is Age of Empires. If AOE was a 5/10 how good is Starcraft/10 ?

Is Starcraft like Eve Online?

Lots of players that used to play Starcraft professionally are now professional poker players. I dont think that professional poker players will switch to being professional Starcraft 2 players (very few will), but I do expect many players in their free time to play Starcraft 2 when they would have been playing poker.

I play online poker professionally and I know that SC2 is going to end up costing me lots of money in wasted time, but I cant help myself - the game is too damn fun. The good news is most of the SC players are pretty good poker players so having them spend time playing SC2 rather than online poker is not a bad thing for the games.

Re: View: Starcraft 2 is going to put a small dent in online poker

only hardcore SC fan will stop putting the hours in poker for that...

regular gamers still put their x hours a week in games anyway with or without SC2.

new games come out every day after all.

I agree it will put a small dent in poker but its not even close to 1% like someone said imo... let alone 0.1%

Starcraft is a Real Time Strategy game, not a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game. In RTS games you control buildings and armies, whereas in MMORPGs you usually control a single character who gets stronger by gaining experience points and finding new items. Every RTS game starts in a neutral situation, each player spawns on a different side of the map with a main base and some worker units, kind of like chess starts with full sets of pieces on the opposite ends of the board. From there on the players gather resources and upgrade their buildings (or "tech") in order to train better units and beat their opponents.

The main difference between RTS games and MMORPGs is the skill factor. An RTS game match is a singular entity that lasts 10-30 minutes and the better player usually wins, like in chess. An MMORPG is an endless grind of leveling up your character and finding new items - the better character (not player) will most likely win the player vs player confrontations. In a nutshell, MMORPGs are fun social games that don't involve a lot of skill (you just have to play a lot in order to level up and know which characters and skills are imbalanced) whereas RTS games need a lot of skill and are very competetive.

From what I've heard and seen (Blizzard Battle Reports) SC2 is really good like pretty much all of Blizzard's games. It may be hard to get into if you've never played RTS games before but it's certainly worth trying out.

RTS games are way more fun and take way more skill than poker and I would much rather play them for a living if the money opportunities were the same.

Re: View: Starcraft 2 is going to put a small dent in online poker

thats only cause in a RTS there is much less luck involved than in poker, you can't really compare apples to oranges.

takes a lot of skill to gain a permanent edge in poker, same for a RTS... that said proving which needs more skill to win consistently would need more then a few lines on a forum to prove.

umm age of empires 2 was awesome, but still SC would be like a 15/10 on that scale? I don't know, unless it's an exponential scale its >10/10^^

i lol because guy said it takes WAY more skill to play SC than poker. how can u compare those two things even? it's like saying it takes way more skill to be a lawyer than to be a doctor. each profession requires different skillset. same with poker and video games.
