Always looked up to apestyles but never knew the extent of what he was going through post Black Friday.

He really opens up in this interview about problems with drugs and alcohol that led to him going broke and in debt.

Sick legend and seems like such a good dude.

Same here... have always been a huge fan of Jon's and admire the fact that he's been successful over such a long period of time despite his off-the-felt battles.

Was 3 handed in the Bodog $100k with this guy way back and he ended up all in vs chip leader with 63o vs KK and WON! Making me miss out on an extra $7k.

One of my best poker memories lol.

Hope you're well Jon. Will watch the interview soon.

I liked the interview a lot. My take away from it, which hits me in the feelz right now is...

Be mindful of your thoughts and circumstances. If you're playing poker you're doing it as a job, hobby, or degenerate. The fact is... all three of those options presupposes that you're probably in a decent country, have access to food/shelter, have internet, and have options/freedom/choices at your disposal. A single adult in the USA can feed and clothe themselves for under 10k/year.

To sit and chase poker dreams isn't a bad thing. On the flip side, chasing losses, arbitrary goals, the next win, and other things (just for their own sake) are illusions and almost always seem to lead to self-defeat regardless of monetary outcome. The fact that you're doing that also presupposes that in your head (your thoughts) ... you believe you aren't enough and don't have enough. All of that is contrary to reality. You're playing a game while millions of others around the world are starving, in prison, enslaved, or dying.

I think the interview shows that if we all get out of all the BS thinking in our head, center ourselves, and find some humility... things will simply flow a lot better for us. We'll realize things aren't so bad, that outcomes have little meaning except for how we perceive them in our heads, and that things are probably pretty good for us if we swap our lenses out.

^^A little preachy but it's good to see poker content like this when far too often i see so many poker players at the casino getting angry and berating people across the table for an -EV play. You're in a building with air conditioning, free drinks, probably free food, clean bathrooms, and playing a game ... wtf are you so mad about? If you can't see how amazing that is... no amount of chasing losses, drugs, etc is going to fill that void.

Thanks for sharing the link.

I worked with Jon for several years and he was never anything but a consummate professional. I had no idea the demons he was battling away from the felt, but he was always a man of his word and came through with some of, IMO, the best MTT content that we ever had at CR.

respect.

highlights the value of having a strong support network with friends and family to help you out of your lowest points, which unfortunately some people don't have
