Trusting shady people can be slightly foolish, but it doesn't mean you deserve to be stolen from. I might think it's unwise to go into a jaguar infested jungle if you're an explorer, but I don't want said explorers to get eaten.

Usually when people steal in the gambling world or stop making payments it's because their web of debts is already more than they can conceivably get out from under (and still maintain their life). People tend to disappear and stop communicating because they have a plan to make a lot of money and fix it all, but it just doesn't happen, and for gamblers $ is seen as a tool, so they are hesitant to make payments. Let's say I owe 5k and I have 1k. The person I owe is probably thinking, give me that 1k and we're good for a while, but in my head I know that I need to use the 1k to ever get close to having the 5k. The peter principle is the reason gambling debts don't get paid back. There is always a higher stake to go to and the ladder always resets you to 0 when you are financially irresponsible. People clear the value they need to pay off their debts and stick around for "a lil profit" and things which seem wildly irresponsible, but seem like fleeting opportunities for them. It's a mess but we've all seen it.

There needs to be accountability in the poker community and the community is the one who needs to keep a half a moral code. That's why it's not a good move to lecture the aggrieved party here. These off-network games have always existed and hundreds of them run perfectly fine all the time. An agent keeping player funds is completely unacceptable.

Tipping is a discussion that is fine to have. You can always inquire about being tipped if that is something you feel you're entitled to. Don't just steal though, and don't pretend you were driven to when there isn't an established industry standard and the conversation has not been had.

I will say that if Vanessa is reading this, nobody who is owed gets out of hand if payment arrangements are made, or communication is kept open and honest. If you screw up, admit it, and work to fix it.

For the purpose of this thread it doesn't matter if OP is illegally gambling or not. There's no law that says you're allowed to steal from somebody if their money is gained through illegal activity.

If she did, it would include a screenshot of messages where her debtor tells her that he can't pay her because he has been scammed for $1.5M.

And don't be surprised if the OP is refusing to pay someone he owes, $1,700, that person is refusing to pay someone they owe, $170, and that person $17 to someone they owe!

I had a lengthy meeting this evening with Vanessa and her backer and we discussed this matter. She doesn't have the money, but I could tell she was crushed with guilt over what has happened, and she took full responsibility and wanted to be held accountable. $500 was collected at the meeting.

I am optimistic that this will be resolved quickly now. I look forward to being able to clear Vanessa's name and have this thread deleted at that time. In the meantime, please do not harass Vanessa in any way online or in person.
