WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Monday struck down a federal law that bars gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states, giving states the go-ahead to legalize betting on sports.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The 1992 law barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.

Will be interesting to see how this effects online poker in US. It will certainly help it as states jump on sportsbetting bandwagon.

Awesome! Illinois better not drag their feet on this one. What better way to pay off some of that debt this terrible state is in from all the corrupt politicians?

The only state that has online sports betting(Nevada) also has IPoker. The other 2 markets that have IPoker(New Jersey and Delaware) also plan on offering sports betting.

3/3

Pennsylvania(which hasn't launched IPoker yet??) also intends to offer sports betting, and I believe already passed legislation like NJ.

4/4 for states that are in online poker that also plan(already have) to offer sports betting.

Half the states want to offer sports betting, so expect a lot of movement in poker. New York and Michigan would be 2 to watch.

Yeah, this is v. good news for poker. Not least of which because we are about to see a surge of sponsorship dollars into the poker market again. Stars just acquired a European sports book operator and is extremely likely to reboot their old U.S. player database as a marketing channel for sports betting. DraftKings / FanDeul will almost certainly step into this channel as well. Some states may opt to consider sports & poker legislation together so this could push things along, certainly an opportunity.

I cover gaming stocks and this has been something we've been excited about for awhile.

Prob a stupid question but... with the states that go ahead and approve sports betting, will that be in person betting (at tracks, casinos etc) or will people be able to sports bet online in those states? Or both?

Depends on the legislation that ultimately passes in each individual state. Some may have one or the other, but IMO, it will likely be both in nearly every state that decides to legalize it.

While it doesn't specifically do anything for online poker, the perception of it being relatively tame by comparison means the states that opt to legalize sports betting are likely to lump poker in too, I would think. Like LastLife said, no coincidence that they seem to go hand in hand.

PokerStars (symbol TSG) is clearing its 2014 ATH on this announcement, market cap is back over $5b as well. Price has been telling you for a couple years how important sports betting and games outside of poker are for the future despite online poker's continued decline/stagnation.
