Hi Everyone:

Our poster, Former DJ, has written a very good analysis of the chapter in our book about the Cuban Missile Crisis. You can find his post on our History Forum and it's located here:

Hi Everyone:

For those interested we are running an excerpt from the book in the August edition of the Two Plus Two Online Poker Strategy Magazine. This is one of my favorite chapters and is titled "The Hated Jack Johnson: Middle Weight Champ Stanley Ketchel Gets Flattened by a Jack Johnson Punch." You can find it here:

Excellent article and I'll look to buy your book.

I played the video of the fight and slowed it down to quarter speed for the two 12th round knockdowns and watched them multiple times.

Ketchel appeared to make no punching contact at all when Johnson went down, nor did there appear to be any punching contact when Ketchel went down shortly afterwards.

I watched the 10 min colour version highlights of the fight. If they were the highlights it must have been a very boring 12 rds.

The highlights to me indicated that it was a phoney war, so my feeling is that the whole match was scripted to last 12 rounds and have a dramatic turnaround ending to enhance movie theater sales, as the article suggests might have been the case.

Hi Wisdom:

I don't agree. First, Ketchel does take a big swing at Johnson and it does appear that johnson is going down before the punch lands. But that just might be Johnson trying to duck out of the way and this would also help explain why he was unhurt when he got up.

However, I think it's clear (to me) that Johnson does hit Ketchel quite solidly with an uppercut right after he gets up, and Ketchel does look like a fighter, once he's on the canvass, who was clearly knocked out.

If you watch the end of this video, you'll hear the sound announcer, which was added many years later, say "Johnson wipes two os Ketchel's teeth from his glove" and you can definitely see the wiping motion.

I do agree that much of the fight was boring. But in those days "sharp" boxing techniques were not yet well developed and there was a lot more clinching and wrestling because of this.

Thanks for the positive comments and I hope you enjoy the book.

Mason
