Did they change the wording of the linked article or are you quoting something different?
The thread subject here on 2p2, and also paragraph four:

No money in drugs, everyone plays poker.

Re: Underground poker game busted in NY - proceeds allegedly used to fund drug operation

I played here a couple of times too. Was pretty standard NYC underground action. 1/3 that played a lot like 2/5 deep stack in a casino. They'd run some bigger games/ PLO upstairs. The drug situation was pretty similar to other underground NYC games. Lots of casual weed/vape-users. Never noted anything harder than that though who knows what was going on. Never noticed drug sales either. Seemed like the usual mix of NYC poker players, which are usually guys with jobs that can't get out to AC on a regular basis and random degens.

Also it was mentioned in the article but they ran an online club on PPPoker. 2/4 PLO and NLHE. I still have $2k in my account there that I don't expect to see at this point...

The rake is astronomical, but what you're describing doesn't really exist in the NYC poker universe. No one is running an illegal game with all the risks that it entails for $6/hand, and no one is buying in for $100. Generally NYC underground games are uncapped or capped very high. People buy in deep. Because there's usually just one or two tables, and people come expecting to make a night out of it, stacks get very deep. Rake is high as well, 1/3 will usually rake 10% with a cap between $10-20. 5/5 and bigger may have a $50 cap. While many games may not be beatable due to rake, these are not games where people sit down and have stacks dwindle to zero. Swings are huge, and people do leave as big winners/losers.

As an example I was playing 1/3 on Saturday in Brooklyn. By midnight there were 6 players at the table, short stack was $800 and the average stack was about $2k.

Re: Underground poker game busted in NY - proceeds allegedly used to fund drug operation

Also played at both the Townhouse and the new ‘club’ a bunch and as others have said the 1-3 game really ran like a 2-5 most of the time. If you arrived for the start of play you’d get 10% ‘bonus’ up to $70 ($700 buyin). Most people bought in for that or $1k. The rake was capped at $15 for that game but that was for any pot over $100.

The setup was actually decent enough and all the dealers proficient. The masseuses generally top drawer eye candy! The “doctors” story is nonsense although many professional types played there and plenty had deep pockets. Lots of faces from the poker scene at the Borgata too. It was in a very accessible part of Manhattan.

The PLO games, held upstairs got very deep and juicy and I’ve seen upwards of $30k plus on the table easily.

As for the drugs to be honest I’m not sure how anyone could have played there and not known it was part of their extra curricular business interests.

Re: Underground poker game busted in NY - proceeds allegedly used to fund drug operation

The fact that people can't get together and gamble with their own money is an absolute abomination.

The fact that human beings cant put what they want in their own bodies (drugs) as long as they don't hurt anyone is a further abomination.

The fact that someone can lose $20,000 in a $500 game, must make their play; an abomination.

Why don't they just legalize casinos and/or poker in the city? It seems like they're finally about to legalize marijuana in NY.

Read the article. Their getting busted in the first instance had nothing to do with advertising or the poker more generally. This was a drug sting in the first instance and that lead authorities to the poker room.

There now is a casino in NYC (Resorts World near JFK/Aqueduct) but it only has electronic games/slots, no poker or live table games. I heard discussion of a casino in Coney Island a couple of years ago, but think NY authorities are focusing on casinos as a means of revitalizing tourism upstate, i.e. the new casino in the Catskills.

Nobody has bundled a big enough bribe for Cuomo yet.

They can't award licenses for a full casino in NYC and its suburbs until either 2020 or 2021. Resorts World NYC is a racino, so they can't have live table games. Then they have two years to build. So, poker in a NYC casino should be coming by 2022 or 2023.

Gambling is considered a public nuisance under the law and is permitted only where the government chooses to permit it. I am okay with government only tolerating unregulated gambling that isn't organized enough for people to make a living running the games. (Not playing, just running.)

That's because you have come to know to accept it. Think of it on a different level. You guy your own home or place of business. You pay taxes each year to a faceless entity to keep the domicile you already paid for and paid taxes on.

You pay taxes on all the money you used to buy your home/business. Now said entity you cannot invite willing people into your home to gamble the money they earned and paid taxes on how they want and charge a fee for using your domicile?

Our whole society is predicated on a sham.

I'm not a libertarian. I'm pretty much the opposite of a libertarian.

played here once, i think rake was capped at 25 for the 5/5 game...much more reasonable than some of the other places in NYC, which tell you $20 and then jack $75 off the table when they think you aren't looking, ****ing scum.
