maybe you can't, but most semi-experienced employers can. That is the whole point of interviews, salary surveys, and reference checks.
The bottom line is: if the "average" wage for position
x is $60,000, and these guys are taking $30,000 to start with no guarantees, then they were suckered.
I don't have a particular problem with the company taking advantage of their new hires this way. It's a free market. Everyone has to learn life lessons sometimes and (hopefully) these guys will be wiser next time some snows them with vague promises.
