I wasn't sure where to oost this thread, or even if it was thread worthy - So if any mod wants to delete the post or move it, you are most welcome to do so.

Onto the post;

I have been following the 1 million pound Triton tournament out of interest and saw the following post which interested me.

Now it was my belief that the whole point of this tournament was to bring recreational players with wealth with the best poker players in the world for an amazing tournament. So I am sitting here wondering how Sosia Jiang meets the criteria? She is arguably the best New Zealand poker pro, and is a self claimed professional poker player, not businesswoman as the criteria suggests?

Here is an article from a New Zealand newspaper about Sosia.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/new...ectid=12120516

Now SJ as she is known in the New Zealand and abroad poker community is second on the New Zealand all time money list, and to note in the past year has had two or three major titles in tournaments although she focuses primarily on high stakes cash games. This includes being runner up at the New Zealand WPT main events and first in the recent Macau high roller. I myself have played with SJ numerous times, and as far as I'm aware, she is a professional poker player.

Anyway what are peoples thoughts on this? personally I'm confused.

Really weird thing to hate on... Either be against private tournaments as a whole or let them do what they want...

Ah I get it she crushed you and you're salty af and hope to take away her 1m dollar soft tourney seat haha

You're insane if you think a 2+2 post is going to take away a 1m seat. I think you're missing the thread completely actually? I'm not salty, more power too her if she wins this, I'm all for New Zealand players winning tournaments promoting poker. I'm more confused by Triton's defintion of a businesswoman and or poker pro.

I don't think business person necessarily means a complete fish recreational player. Why can't a successful business person be a good poker player on the side?

I'd agree with that, but it's just a interesting topic, hence my post.
The way the format works is they place all recreational players on the same tables, and all the pros on the same tables and then combine further into the tournament (I assume when a certain number of the field is eliminated). This being the main talking point, when is it an unfair advantage for the business person to still be considered a business person? Would inviting Daniel negrauno be fair? as his income comes from primarily business ventures these days and not playing poker.

There’s no unfair advantage. We’re talking about an invitational poker tournament. Even if one of the other players had an issue with that, they could just back out of playing.

Again, they can invite whoever they want. Nothing is “unfair”, everyone is paying a buy-in and nobody is forced to play the event.

In general, “business person” is whoever you want to call a business person. The kid with the lemonade stand is running a business. That said, they are certainly way more inclined to invite a female or somebody of non-poker fame because it’s good PR. I have no idea if Negreanu would meet that criteria though. But even if Barrack Obama was known as a total crusher, I am 100% sure he could play that thing if he wanted to.

I see where you're coming from;
But the way the tournament has special rules and continuously mention recreational players vs pros, surely you do not believe putting say Tom Dwan as a businessman and letting him play against the recreational field for the first three days isnt an advantage? Imagine playing at the world series, and cutting the field to players who have cashed for over $1000, and those that have cashed under $1000, and allowing one pro to play with those that have cashed under $1000, still no advantage?

"For the majority of the initial three days, the organisers will split the field. This will see the recreational players battling against one another and the pro players playing each other. As the field narrows, the recreational and pro players will then go head to head for the big money.
Triton has created a number of rules that aim to level the playing field."

Yeah but how do you define these categories? Should they let Fedor Holz in as a businessman, because he is "retired" from poker? Is Talal Shakerchi a pro?
