I play in Los Angeles and thought we had a corner on the market when it came to terrible rake structures especially at low stakes (magnified by relatively low caps in the lower stakes).
TO live poker is very poor. It either requires a long drive to increasingly unsatisfactory out-of-town cardrooms or playing underground. Rakes are too high in either case, though I have a friend that says there are some nice underground rooms around.
The provincial government now allows online within the province only.
There is the annual 8+ weeks associated with the Canadian National Exhibition. Also overraked, though many think the play is so loose that it's still worth it. I've often played the 20-40 limit Omaha with a half-kill (therefore mostly 30-60). Potentially very profitable but super high variance as played. (Often capped 5-6 ways preflop in the later evening hours.)
The Woodbine raceway has had live poker and then replaced it with live electronic tables -- but that venue was killed by the government. Rumours about its return circulate. Always said to be coming next year ...
