^^ Please stop posting in this thread guys. This is a black eye for NYC poker. Its embarrassing.

If you do anything, rate the thread 1 star.

Trust me, there IS a great poker scene here, but ah, lets just say, game selection is key.

Thank You

Never heard of this before, but there's no way I'm watching it after that trailer, that main guy looks like an absolutely awful representation for poker.

"I'll take A,Ks over a blonde any day" Yeah thattssss why you're a virgin... out of choice

edit: obviously going to watch it for cringe

edit2: Wonder why he's a broke film maker. Also, when you have a family to support get a f*****g job you scumbag, don't put your wife through that.

Died of cringe yet?

He thinks his voice and what he's saying is so profound, and his family is interesting enough to film.

Cool fake games with the cheap chips as well.

Andre would get annoying real quick with all his antics so you may have a good point.

Full movie was reposted to YouTube recently, if anyone's interested. I'm about 10 minutes in right now:

Narration fueled by Quaaludes ?

Bailed 21 minutes in, during a truly annoying segment to try to watch.

If anyone gets past that point and recommends continuing on, let me know.

Too bad for me, I watched the rest.

it's free, but only marginally entertaining.

Abso-****ing-lutely loved this docco, being from Ontario myself there's so many familiar archetypes represented here, and it perfectly captures such a golden age for poker. Would aboslutely love if they did a follow up with all these characters.

Bravo!

Yeah, this is about where I fell, too. I really wanted to like it, and rooted for the filmmaker himself. But most of the other characters were either annoying or uninteresting.

There was an extent to which it felt like a low-budget parody of Rounders, too. The deadpan narration, the explanation of hold 'em, and of course the underground games. To hold a game in what looked like a meeting room contrasted to KGB's club and the Chesterfield in an unintentionally funny way.

The only interesting character was the drunk tournament player - should have just focused on him for an hour. The other guys had no story and were completely pointless (the worst being Andre). I guess the guy who was running a game and had his stuff taken could have been interesting, but it felt only tangentially related to poker grinders.

This came up as a suggestion in YouTube and I watched during a stint of insomnia. Did not realize how old it was for the first few minutes until the drunk degen was playing old school poker stars.

Pretty depressing. I was originally going to post and see if anyone had updates on what happened to any of the featured guys, but decided that would lead to only a more depressing fact set.

I felt bad for Lawrence. Lot of little man pain and stubbornness. Could not figure out if it was just pride, lack of $6k, or a suspicion that the landlord was taking his possessions in any scenario, but was sad to see him so beaten down.

I wish the alcoholic degen always just one score away was atypical, but way too common. Chances of his liver being functional are slim and heartbreaking that his wife and children are living the degen life by proxy.

I saw this at its premiere. It very much caught the Toronto poker scene at that moment ...

Any idea what happened to any of the individuals featured? What is the live poker scene like now? I have only been to Toronto a few times, but definitely love the city (at least in the summer). Have to think with online players migrating north that the live scene is way more solid now, but PokerAtlas has only a few casinos listed and reviews indicate the rake is outrageous. I play in Los Angeles and thought we had a corner on the market when it came to terrible rake structures especially at low stakes (magnified by relatively low caps in the lower stakes).

TO live poker is very poor. It either requires a long drive to increasingly unsatisfactory out-of-town cardrooms or playing underground. Rakes are too high in either case, though I have a friend that says there are some nice underground rooms around.

The provincial government now allows online within the province only.

There is the annual 8+ weeks associated with the Canadian National Exhibition. Also overraked, though many think the play is so loose that it's still worth it. I've often played the 20-40 limit Omaha with a half-kill (therefore mostly 30-60). Potentially very profitable but super high variance as played. (Often capped 5-6 ways preflop in the later evening hours.)

The Woodbine raceway has had live poker and then replaced it with live electronic tables -- but that venue was killed by the government. Rumours about its return circulate. Always said to be coming next year ...
