I was playing 10/25 in april of 2012 at hollywood hard rock during a series they had there for a 10k and these two asian regs were playing to my left waiting on the 50/100 game.



they were talking among themselves and the context seemed to be that they were old friends who hadn't seen each other in a while. the one who spoke like he knew Tom personally said two things:

Tom was playing on a new account that used to belong to a fish and was playing 50/100+ online but the game has sort of past him by and the games were actually forming around him in tough line ups.

the second thing he said is he heard first hand tom had gotten backed to play the big games in macau which this was at a time right after black friday were the macau games were still possible to get into and according to this guy tom deliberately lost millions in these games until whoever was backing him was forced to drop him, then when they did he came back in with his own money and a permanent invite into these games owing to the whales seeing him as a big loser.

from there I'm not sure how this ends up with him being in debt and all that and this is of course 3rd hand info, but it's what I heard.
