He basically said he thought that the ponzi schemer was to blame, and it's not the celebrities problem.

It sounds like the reason they are going after the money is not that he embezzled and lost money playing poker, but he lost money and embezzled to pay off his debts. Is that different in the eyes of the law in the US?

It might make a difference.

First it is easier to know where it went. He didnt lose it (the stolen money) over the course of the game. But he owed someone or more than someone big. Stole money, paid them back. That means they accepted stolen property.

While they may not get in trouble, it might make it easier for the courts to take it back.

This wasn't an underground card room, this was a home game. An underground card room would be taking a rake, and making a profit off of the game.

A home game that doesn't rake/profit is typically not illegal. The amount of money shouldn't matter.

I actually knew a lot of people who played in that game at one point or another, and the stories I heard come from back in 2007.

From what I was told, Tobey and a guy named Houston basically got to decide who was going to be in or who was shut out. If they even sniffed a pro, they wouldn't let them anywhere near the game. There may have been an exception for big name pros though, I don't know. They would let unknowns into the game from time to time, but if they gave no action they weren't allowed back. So to last in the game, people needed to be properly rolled to LAG it up or they wouldn't make it back.

Some chick ran the game. Can't remember her name. It was primarily held at the Four Seasons back in 2007. She made a mint from the game, because the players regularly tipped her from their winnings. That changed one night when Cody Leibel tipped her somewhere around $15k even after losing (lost something over $300k i believe). Some of these regulars said he ruined it for the rest of them because after that night I was told she'd try and get tips from everyone involved (including losers). I'm sure if you didn't tip after that you wouldn't get invited back.

If they were gonna go after anyone, they should go after that chick. It's hard to say whether any player won or lost. She clearly won..... every single night they played, and the game ran weekly.

i think tobey maguire should have to pay back the money. same for leo and the rest of the crew. they used trickery to obtain this money which was stolen from hard working citizens.

the ruderman cat needs to have an additional 3 yrs tacked on to his sentence for gambling away his client's money. if he had spent it on private school for his kids or a nice boat then that would have been money not considered to be wasteful.
