It might make a difference.
First it is easier to know where it went. He didnt lose it (the stolen money) over the course of the game. But he owed someone or more than someone big. Stole money, paid them back. That means they accepted stolen property.
While they may not get in trouble, it might make it easier for the courts to take it back.
