sorry to ask this, but did you embellish a little bit in your post??

Don't get me wrong, i love to read about these kind of stories and live vicariously through them, since i have a family and kids to care for out east here, so i don't have the option to pick up and leave, but sometimes i do wish i could give it a try for aqn extended period.

Anyways, you mentioned one of your worst sessions in this thread as being -96 big bets for three sessions......

sorry, but if you have been playing professionally in vegas for three years, that should not stand out as one of the "worst" sessions. heck, to lose 100 bigbets in just ONE session is a really bad day, but not something most pros would describe as extrodinary.

For example, 100 big bet loss at 10-20 (my game of choice), is a $2000 hit. Its definitely a very bad day, where the fish caught their draws, and very few of my hands hold up, but it happens, even to me, who is definitely not playing pro hours here. And you are talking about 3 sessions to accumulate that loss....

Either you are very very good, play with marked cards (kidding), or the law of statistical variance has not caught up to you yet.

Or maybe his sessions aren't as long as yours.

EDIT: You know what, I've never had a -100 BB session either now that I think of it. 75BB's, yes, but not 100. And I play way longer sessions than Dynasty with a higher standard deviation.

Playing live, having a session near that is very rare. You get about 1/8th of the hands, and often get demoralized breaking the 50 BB mark and just call it a day. Online its easy, you have 2-4 tables going, you just click more chips and get more chips. A few hours later, when you realize you just not gonna get back to even, you look at the carnage. ugh. I've lost 63BBs once live and its my only loss over 50. Online I've had a couple of sessions that nearly broke 100 BBs and a number of -50 BB sessions.

i'm sure one of the facts that play into this is that i play online, and shorthanded, so the speed of the number of hands played, along with the variance is way bigger that live play.

however, 100 BB's over the course of 3 sessions i find hard to believe even in BM cardroom to be that significant.

BTW, are you playing in WSOP?

That definitely explains it. Because you referred to "marked cards" I assumed you were talking about live play.

As for the WSOP, I don't play tournaments, and at this point, I don't see myself taking the effort to learn. I've had a friend offer to buy me a seat out of his pocket and split any profit 50/50 and I turned it down.

No. What would be the point?

The largest loss I can remember in one day is a 40 big bet loss in a Mirage 10-20 game with 2+2er Jim Rivett sitting next to me. That doesn't include an 86 big bet loss in the 2+2 3-6 "home" game at the Bicycle a few months ago.

On the other side, the largest win I think I've had is a 65 big bet win in a Mirage 20-40 game. A 3-6 Pineapple game at the Bicycle is right in that neighborhood as well.

That would depend on the length of the session.

FWIW, I'm nowhere close to the skill level of Dynasty or Clarkmeister, but here are my results to date.

I play two sessions per day, five days per week. One online 3-hour session and one live 4-hour session. I don't quit when I'm ahead or behind a certain amount. I quit when my time is up.

My biggest 3-hour online losing session so far is -73 BB (playing two tables).
My biggest 4-hour live losing session so far is -52 BB.

Paul,

The worst B&M loss I've ever had (in a couple thousand hours of play) is about 80BB. Online (in a few hundred hours of play) I've lost 100BB a number of times. I would look up my biggest session loss, but that's too depressing.

The difference, of course, is the fact that if I play 8 hours at the cardroom, I get about 250-300 hands. If I play 4 hours online, I get about 1600 hands.

Sweet post. My first love was also chess, I started playing a couple of years ago in high school but never actually had a USCF rating. I guess the love of games in general as a common thread of most poker players is to be expected, but I didn't expect so many players to love chess as well, that's really cool. I'm a sophomore in college getting my degrees in philosophy/political science. I have no idea where those will take me, but it's refreshing to read a success story of someone who's bucked the 9-5 work week.

Clarkmeister, could you explain this a bit more? I'm just surprised to read this, regardless whether you play tournaments or not. Seems like a +EV play, if you're investing nothing out of pocket.

Although conversely, I guess you'd be playing your regular ring game instead, and that's clearly a +EV play as well. Or did you simply not want the pressure of freerolling with your friend's 10k? Can't blame you if that's the case.

Anyway, just thought it was an interesting comment.

In my last 2500 hours of play, my worst sessions in B&M rooms (VEGAS ONLY) were: 32 big bets in 10-20, 42 big bets in 20-40, and 27 big bets in 30-60. My biggest wins in these games were 40.5 big bets in 10-20, 39 big bets in 20-40 and 22 big bets in 30-60.

I think 100 big bets is alot to lose in one session, either online or in a B&M room. I remember Annie Duke saying something a few years ago about using a guideline of 25 big bets as a maximum session loss. I don't know if she has "adjusted" this number as the games have become more loose.

If you are a person like me that virtually never has HUGE wins, it's probably best that you dont ever have HUGE losses.

I have always TRIED to use a guideline of never losing more in one session that I "am likely" to make in 2. So, if my "average win" is about 10-12 big bets, given my "guidelines", I should not exceed a 20-22 big bet loss for any one session.

OH NO...the "silly Subject" of monay management rears is ugly head once again, huh?

All I know is that at the end of the day, it's all money to me.....

Babe

hehe..I was thinking the same thing...

Congrats, Dynasty...mindboggling that your understanding of the game is as good as it is and that you have been playing only 3 years.

how strange, ive done it a few times, and ive also won over 100 bbs (im talking b and m, online doesnt count) a few times as well. ive also been stuck over 70 or more big bets a few times and came back to have a winning session. but i dont ever recall having been up that much and having lost it all back.. pretty obvious stuff if you know me.

Jebus. This paragraph absolutely floored me:
Quote:
There I was- unemployed, looking for a new home, disillusioned with the 9-5 workforce, and knowing the one thing I truly loved doing was playing games. So, I made probably the biggest leap of faith of my life to date. With experience of only 19 hours of 1-3 stud, I packed a few bags and flew to Las Vegas with the intention of making myself a professional poker play.
Great story. Thank you very much for sharing it.

Great story, I really enjoyed reading it and am glad things are working so well for you.

I am working up a story of my own for my 7 year poker experience. Hopefully I'll have it up sometime soon.

that's because 100 BBs at the limits you play is like 8 million dollars.

Great post Dynasty! Congrats on all the success.

100BB in a single session seems excessive to me. It's funny, I thought I had in the past gone through some 100Bb sessions, but in looking at my records, online the worst table loss I have ever had was minus 47BB. I did book a loss of 70BB that session - with two other games going. In B&M I've never gone through more than 40BB, and that was way out there for me. Usually if I drop 25BB I'm too depressed to keep playing.

Interesting story. Sounds like there was a lot going on there in your crazy decision to leave work over a trivial matter, though I don't think that's really why you left but only a symbol of more significant dissatisfactions with either the working world or your particular job or both. And also there was something real and central about you that you were addressing with your decision to try poker -- in a different city yet -- with trivial experience or knowledge. Good thing you had the cash to back up the shot you took at living your own life.

I think I can understand your coming to a definitive decision about work over something relatively mundane and trivial, or under the cover of it. I almost walked off the job at the end of the day just last week. Things accumulate through the years. It must be nice to not only have that kind of courage, but the talent and intelligence to make it pay off. I may have none of the three to near the degree you do, but your story resonated with me.
