Go for it, man. You only live once.

Also, I fully understand if you're not comfortable with it any more but your older posts used to have more about your day to day life and some psychological stuff than just poker. It'd be nice if the theme and tone of those older posts could return, but I'm not complaining. Good luck

Hi Dynasty,

Congrats on 10 years!

Looking back, any regrets? Would you have come to Vegas, knowing what you do now?

Thanks for the great read, and I hope we cross paths at WSOP.

Whacked.

Great thread. I read this every once and a while to motivate me to keep playing online:P

Grinding 8/16 limit holdem live is my version of hell and I say that as a professional mid-high limit holdem player. Different strokes, though.

From your recent update:

Quote:
I decided to move out of that comfort zone and make an extended stay in the Bellagio’s 30-60 O/8 game.

"Just one week after my $5,000 win, I left the Bellagio scratching my head about how I could lose $3,000 in such a soft game."
Really? Losing 50 bets at a 30 60 game happens even live on a weekly basis and online almost daily.

At least you are still trying to take a shot at higher stakes...ten years in and not able to beat higher than 8/16 live is a bad sign, though. This game is a moving target and even just keeping up at your current level is probably going to take all your skill. It's pretty likely you've reached your level of competence which is a difficult thing to realize in poker.

Kevmath should compile all Dynasty updates and make it a sticky.

I would like to read his whole story, but I don't want to go over whole thread to find the yearly updates.

In a soft split pot game where you consider yourself one of the best players? It should be relatively rare.

Pretty awesome read. I love how you decided to leap in head first 10 years ago and decided to move to Vegas to play poker for a living.

Living in that degen town, not losing your roll to BlackJack, roulette, craps, Baccarat, sportsboooks....is not easy. It's too tempting to end up broke, begging for quarters on the street, and dead by suicide in a dinky motel. Keep it up.

Dynasty,

What your bankroll? Do you have the > $75k for the 75 game?

Have you thought about selling pieces of yourself? If the game is as great as you think, and you're as good as you think, you could probably sell with mark-up.

I don't think it is that rare. You can go through 50 bets in very short order with nut-nut on the turn and no piece of it on the river.

That's the head-scratching/walking away into a wall bit, not "how did I lose $3k?" but more of "how did I manage to not at least drag half of one of those pots along the way?"

Would be nice to get more detail on the leaks of the 30-60 O8 field. And further, what leaks of your own that you plugged.

I just stumbled upon this thread today and have been reading it throughout the day as I had a few minutes here and there. Dynasty, thanks so much for telling your story, it is both interesting and insightful. One thing I am now wondering after reading the whole thread is are you married or have you ever been? Children?

...as long as you play like a complete nit.

I was playing 8-16 Omaha 8 or better exclusively and putting in substantial hours. I was definitely feeling a mastery of the game, though the competition was admittedly mediocre at best. This game had become easy money and I naturally started thinking if there was more easy money to be made at higher stakes.
OK buddaaaaaaaay.

The 2011 WSOP is going to be my biggest test yet. I’m not going to play any small games. I’m throwing myself into the unknown again and seeing what happens. If my results are as bad, measured by big bets, as I had in April, I’ll have to give up and protect my bankroll. If my results are good, I don’t know what happens next.
I hope for your sake you don't run good that month, thus confirming what a great player you are. Could be the worst thing to ever happen to you professionally.

Wow, this thread was a real gem to stumble on, I feel privileged to be able to read all of the yearly updates in a row without waiting.

Random analogy: this thread reminds me of the movie "Hoop Dreams"; the story just naturally unfolds and tells itself as the documentary progresses from its starting point (and proves better than fiction).

It sounds to me like OP's most significant strength that the vast majority of us lack is the ability to take a step back and survey the landscape, whether it's evaluating his own play or engaging in optimal table/game selection.

In the off chance OP that feels like fielding questions, here is mine: is your ultimate goal to treat your bankroll like a 401K and build it to the point that you can retire and focus exclusively on chess, Harry Potter books and whatever other passions you may have but have yet to mention?

I ask because I think you made it clear that your motivation is to avoid regular 9-5 work, though I suspect that poker is enough of a passion in it's own right that it would still occupy at least a marginal role in your optimal retired life.

I just finished reading this from the beginning..Year 10 is starting to have the passion that you had in year one which you were lacking from year 2-9..I am glad to read that you are moving up in stakes and seem motivated to make some money...Best of luck to you sir for you to write a great 11th year for all 2+2ers to read...

April was a complete disaster. With just a few exceptions, everything that could go wrong at a poker table probably did for me that month. In $$$, I’ve never lost nearly so much in such a period of time. Measured by big bets, it’s about equal to my biggest downswing. But, losing a large # of big bets comes much easier when the $$$ are smaller.
Do you think the games got tougher in April with Black Friday and all?

The NLHE Vegas pro's are seeing more internet players in there games, are you seeing the same thing in the O/8 games?
