Grinding 8/16 limit holdem live is my version of hell and I say that as a professional mid-high limit holdem player. Different strokes, though.

From your recent update:

Really? Losing 50 bets at a 30 60 game happens even live on a weekly basis and online almost daily.

At least you are still trying to take a shot at higher stakes...ten years in and not able to beat higher than 8/16 live is a bad sign, though. This game is a moving target and even just keeping up at your current level is probably going to take all your skill. It's pretty likely you've reached your level of competence which is a difficult thing to realize in poker.

In a soft split pot game where you consider yourself one of the best players? It should be relatively rare.

Living in that degen town, not losing your roll to BlackJack, roulette, craps, Baccarat, sportsboooks....is not easy. It's too tempting to end up broke, begging for quarters on the street, and dead by suicide in a dinky motel. Keep it up.

What your bankroll? Do you have the > $75k for the 75 game?

Have you thought about selling pieces of yourself? If the game is as great as you think, and you're as good as you think, you could probably sell with mark-up.

I don't think it is that rare. You can go through 50 bets in very short order with nut-nut on the turn and no piece of it on the river.

That's the head-scratching/walking away into a wall bit, not "how did I lose $3k?" but more of "how did I manage to not at least drag half of one of those pots along the way?"

Wow, this thread was a real gem to stumble on, I feel privileged to be able to read all of the yearly updates in a row without waiting.

Random analogy: this thread reminds me of the movie "Hoop Dreams"; the story just naturally unfolds and tells itself as the documentary progresses from its starting point (and proves better than fiction).

It sounds to me like OP's most significant strength that the vast majority of us lack is the ability to take a step back and survey the landscape, whether it's evaluating his own play or engaging in optimal table/game selection.

In the off chance OP that feels like fielding questions, here is mine: is your ultimate goal to treat your bankroll like a 401K and build it to the point that you can retire and focus exclusively on chess, Harry Potter books and whatever other passions you may have but have yet to mention?

I ask because I think you made it clear that your motivation is to avoid regular 9-5 work, though I suspect that poker is enough of a passion in it's own right that it would still occupy at least a marginal role in your optimal retired life.
