Re: walking from/to the Rio. 3 things to consider:

1. Where do you need to go exactly? Rio to Bellagio/Caesars Palace is pretty short, Rio to MGM or Wynn isn't.
2. Temperature and personal level of fitness.
3. Risk aversion.

If you use your car at home to pick up food half a mile away, there's no good reason to start walking in Vegas unless you're doing sightseeing on the Strip. If you're in decent shape and enjoy walking around, Rio to Bellagio isn't a big deal even if it's warm outside.

A couple years ago there was a thread in LVL about walking from the airport to the Strip. I don't remember the details but I think some people claimed you couldn't do that in the summer. So I obviously did it in the afternoon on an August day and posted a screenshot of my Garmin Connect.
Even I wouldn't walk from Rio to anywhere on the Strip except for Bellagio if it was >110F. I also wouldn't walk if I was carrying a large amount of cash.

If you're attempting to register for a weekend event around the start time, yes.

Registration will be available at the Rio starting sometime in August. Registration at the main WSOP cage is 24/7 starting from 9am September 30 for all events.

Registration will also be available online and you can use various methods to pay: Wire transfer, credit card, ACH, etc. Those details likely coming late July.

The walk itself is fine if you're in any sort of reasonable shape.

I would never take that walk carrying a large amount of cash or after dark unless the street is crowded. You're a sitting duck for a robbery. People claim to have been robbed at gunpoint in the Rio parking lot so the idea that one could be robbed on the bridge is hardly farfetched.

Also, a general guess is that, like most cities, violent crime is up in Vegas. Homicides clearly are up but I can't find robbery statistics so far. I think the rule in Vegas, and honestly everywhere right now, is to avoid putting yourself on an island in an area known for robbery and violence. It's getting worse in NYC and lots of other places every day.

This sounds encouraging, Taxis or Uber/ Lyft rides. Hopefully they will be safer than walking anywhere to another location. I know pros usually carry chips instead of cash as it is easier to carry from casino to casino.
Poker players for the most part are some of the most fair and straight up people I have found. I have only been hustled a few times in strange locations or when Black Friday went down and everyone lost their bankrolls.

Venetian, for sure. Wynn, almost certainly. Aria, maybe, but it might just be high roller stuff. The Planet Hollywood poker room is closing on July 11, so who know if they will run a tournament series (which doesn't need a cash game room to be run).

Just read about that, very sad news.

Over the last couple of years I always went to PH if I wanted to play during the day. That was the only room where you constantly found at least a couple drunk people at 11AM on a Wednesday morning.

Potential further delays to the reopening of travel to the US. Won’t be too upset if we have to spend a couple of weeks in Mexico as a stepping stone to getting in, good time zone to grind and less euro regs for the WSOP will jump through those hoops..

In saying that, given the US is about to feel the wrath of the delta variant and is struggling to vaccinate >50% of the population, getting there maybe the least of the worries..

Good WSOP conversation here. Here is my take

I honestly thought 2019 was the final year at Rio, and Caesars was planning to move the event to something like the new Caesars forum. Few Caesars properties have that type of convention space size thought so back to Rio in 2021. For these large low buy in events I expect a shortage of dealers and many unexperienced dealers. Also just with all those people, long lines and chaos all around. Just be kind to all employees.

Uber/Lyft is already bad enough now (fares & wait time) and I dont see much improvement in October. Just pay the extra for a cab or even higher priced rental car. Also ask your driver to drop you off the back to save 10min walking through the Rio casino floor. Using Frank Sinatra and Sammie Davis Jr drive between the strip & interstate is way faster to get around instead of having any interaction with Las Vegas blvd.

Im planning to go for a week and debating AirBnB or hotel stay. Again, transportation is a cost factor and its hard to trust Uber/Lyft times. Odd because in 2019, getting one of these rides was easy. I am debating one hotel for weekend rates, a different hotel during cheaper weekly rates. Maybe a Hampton Inn, Hyatt or Marriott chain hotel might be an option. Hell people think the area by Southpoint is far, but if you have a car, it is a short drive. The older I get, I realize staying on a strip hotel is an unneeded luxury if you are there for WSOP. A smart marketing idea for a hotel such as Virgin for example, would be to offer an all day shuttle to WSOP, but thats never gonna happen.

EDC and LV Raiders home game both occur on the weekend of Oct 22-24th so that will be the worst time to get a hotel or flight. The prices now already reflect that.

People really discussed walking from Bellagio to Rio? Ya'll just like pain and getting possibly mugged? Good luck with that.

I do enjoy the surge of poker players from all across the planet. The cash game action always has an uptick at many of these spots. I stick to 1/3 or 2/5 games so I will probably call ahead to get on the long wait lists. Years back you would see a few WSOP limit games here and there but that idea seems gone for 2021. I get it, limit is boring, but I still liked the option. Hopefully the kiosk registration will make it far easier to register for events. As I read earlier, you need to do a verification first before future buyins will process

Am I the only one who wishes there was a cellphone ban for these WSOP events? Make a policy ff you have to use your phone, you have to walk out of the table tournament area. This is another wish that has no chance.

Thanks for nothing Caesars for increasing the prize pool rake on smaller tournaments.

Lastly, for any locals, more restaurants I eat off the strip, I notice I get a better meal, price and service. Any recommendations are always welcome. The food choices at Rio are limited. Like I started to go to Roma Restaurant & Deli on spring mountain road when I saw Todd Brunson promoting it (he owns it). Place is actually quite good. Another spot I enjoyed was Tacos & Beer over on Paradise Rd. So any local recommendations that are low key and convenient is appreciated.

Good luck fellow degens

WSOP Online returns, but future of series uncertain

"The WSOP Online was created last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, offering players an outlet with live poker across the country mostly shut down. The WSOP Online returned this year with the fate of the live WSOP at the Rio still uncertain. (The flagship WSOP is now slated for Sept. 30 to Nov. 23.)

WSOP executive director Ty Stewart said he expects the flagship WSOP to return to its normal summer dates next year. The fate of the WSOP Online has not been determined, he said.

“Tradition is very important to the WSOP,” Stewart said in an email interview. “We’re making a new tradition with WSOP Online, but we haven’t yet committed to its long-term form. We’re eager to see the response this year when both a live WSOP and WSOP Online are within the same calendar year.”

This year’s U.S. portion of the WSOP Online runs from Thursday through Aug. 1 with 33 bracelet events on WSOP.com. (The WSOP awards trophy bracelets for its tournament victories.) Players must be physically located in Nevada or New Jersey to play, but they do not have to be residents."

Sounds like they have some serious concerns about the Delta variant and what that would look like if it continues to spread. That would really suck if they have to cancel it again.

That’s what I gathered from the post Parisron made. It says “The WSOP Online returned this year with the fate of the live WSOP at the Rio still uncertain.”

Given that borders are shutting again in Australia and other parts of the world and LA County is recommending masks again due to Delta, I think it’s safe to assume the WSOP’s comments are a reminder of the tentativeness of the schedule especially in light of Delta.

I think the quote "The WSOP Online returned this year with the fate of the live WSOP at the Rio still uncertain", means that they scheduled the online version for 2021 before they knew for sure about the Live version for 2021.

Hmm….maybe. Poorly worded and an unusual thing to say in an article dated just yesterday. I hope you’re right.

I read it the same way you did at first, then decided a statement like that doesnt really make sense at this point in time, and decided it must mean that they arent sure if the live wsop will remain at the rio or be held elsewhere.

Having said that, its going to be awful if delta shuts us down again.

No virus 'automatically' shuts down things. If things shut down, that will be a decision taken by over-cautious and panicky leaders.

My read on this is that they really aren't going to be able to staff it or they are at least very concerned about staffing it so they are hedging their bets and maybe even alluding to the delta variant as a potential cop out. It's amazing how bad the staffing issues are out there. I was at one of the biggest casinos on the east coast and they did not have enough dealers to even deal with the demand for table games on a weekday afternoon.

If they pay them enough (dealers) they will come!
That's really what they need to do.
I think a little more rake is ok with most poker players (so they can pay dealers more) if it comes down to having a series or not.
Having said that I think it is past the time to cancel the series at this point.
Flights, hotel rooms/AirB&B's mostly all booked by players now.
If it comes down to capping/selling out fields so be it. It may be smart to early registar this year.
So excited to come out this year, let's do this! The camaradeire amoung poker players is second to none. Let's have some fun! And win a **it ton of money!

For Christ’s sake learn some basic grammar; it is so painful to read anything you post here, and with every sentence you write you merely reinforce all the stereotypes about the ignorance of people from Essex. Are you really not able to distinguish between ´no’ and ´know’ ? Please learn some punctuation, spelling and syntax before you post on the internet again - you are bringing our nation into disrepute with your illiterate drivel.

FWIW, the suggestions expressed earlier in the thread are that PH will NOT be running a series in parallel with the WSOP, and that their poker room and tournament series are defunct.

blame the politicians for still giving out unemployment to people who by september won't have worked in 18 months, and giving them bonus unemployment to top it off.

Meh, lots of people with poor grammar and spelling, so I don't think that's really worth the time; it's their inability to look up anything on their own that's aggravating. The majority of their posts have been about information that could be easily found, like this question where a quick Google search finds plenty of results that say the poker room closure is permanent.

It’s a general idleness and sense of entitlement, and it expresses itself both via slovenly writing and lazy questioning. The initiative lies in the offensive suggestion that their time is more valuable than yours.
