Really doubt it's for patron-protection reasons...hotels don't give a F about you. More likely it's for hotel liability reasons...not sure exactly how / why, but there's no way it's driven by patron privacy concerns rather than their own bottom line.
Did anyone read the article for the security expert?
They don't monitor those areas because of liability issues. All of a sudden the hotels are exposing themselves to the cost of monitoring thousands of square feet and also how to respond appropriately.
What happens if there is an assault in progress and it takes them 10 minutes to respond even though it was on the screen and being recorded? They could easily be held accountable.
Little PR mishaps are a small cost to pay. Nobody really cares.
