Very very doubtful, it won't become law until signed by the Governor General. I imagine the timeline would be that the bill passes both houses then sites pull out the next day or shortly after

I think they're in a spot like PokerStars was before this legislation where it's technically breaking the law but theres nothing anyone can do about it because they have no assets. Unless Australia puts their license in the UK in jeopardy if they have one but I have no idea if they do. I mean, 5dimes offers wagering to the US (and Australia) and that's a much bigger no-no than Australia given the powers of the DOJ and the US can't do anything to stop that.

I hope Pinnacle stay, if not I know they don't really enforce against VPNing though (I may or may not have used a VPN for Pinny while in a certain country) but you might have to get an overseas address to keep your account and a VPN if they do pull out. Who knows.

I do know the govt is looking into unethical account closures/restrictions for all winners as happens with all of the Australian books atm though, would be cool if it becomes a forced accept bet from all punters as opposed to 'whale can bet $10k on match, sharp can bet $6' as it is currently on a lot of local books

I doubt Stars will put out with no notice either, it'll be a 'we're pulling out at x time' announcement once the legislation is finalised/signed/ratified/whatever needs to be done and that will count as complying. If they did shut you out mid tourney i'd assume they'd refund your equity but who knows

No chance at all ! PokerStars have retreated from several markets in the last year due to unfavourable government regulation and each time they have done it in an orderly , if brisk , manner .Normally 1-3 days notice .All players will be well informed on how to remove any funds they may have on the site so do not worry about mid game the lights going out .Will not happen .

1) We need to talk to the Governor General.

2) We need to talk to the MPs.

3) We need to place a TV ad.

4) We need to send a group of poker players to the House on 17/05/2007.

Online poker in Australia: Players fear their hobby will be taken away
By Nick Whigham, http://www.news.com.au

"A previous review of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, which the new bill seeks to amend, suggested the Act be changed to pave the way for the regulation of online poker sites.

As a change.org petition launched by the AOPA is quick to point out, Sally Gainsbury from the University of Sydney observed in her submission to the review in 2012 that online poker appears to have relatively low likelihood of leading to gambling problems.

The UK has previously passed legislation that allowed the government to regulate international poker sites while maintaining access for British citizens, keeping them in the international players pool. And Mr Del Duca would like to see Australia take a similar approach.

“The government reviews (into the Interactive Gambling Act 2001) have suggested that online poker be looked at as a separate entity and that it be licensed and regulated. We’re just calling on the government to do that,” Mr Del Duca said."

We need to show this topic to those MPs.

Latest from PokerStars from their quarterly briefing

"Currently, we are permitting individuals from Australia to play poker in our sites. However, as we discussed previously, if the current proposed legislation is enacted in Australia, we intend to block players in that market. We currently estimate that the proposed legislation could be considered in late May and we would block players in that market approximately 30 days thereafter."

@marke, You are a joke.
Can you explain why? if you can ever think clear.

The TV program reported many much smaller issues.

.

nah fair play, you've got me pegged pretty well. I am a joke and quite frankly a lil embarrassed.
your concise, well articulated arguments have swayed me and I no longer feel A Current Affair is the most redundant television show of the last 15 years. you should fax them all the info you have asap.
please keep in mind a reply may take a lil longer than usual as they're currently a reporter down. seems the guy going after the dodgy tradesman's a pedophile :/

end of derail.

I pitched the idea of this story to a friend who presents on 60 minutes last night. I didn't expect there to be interest and to be honest there wasn't really. I'm not sure I did the best pitch and I'm thinking I may make a (better) second attempt. To this end, what would be your pitch? I have some other contacts also (including 'A Current Affiar'!) so could think about another line also.
