Got my 888poker withdrawal notification today. Super pissed off to say the least.

Here's a question. If I can open a new account as a resident of a country where online poker is legal, will I be able to play whilst located in Australia?

Very surprising that 888 would close down before the legislation passed.

I wonder if the withdrawals are indefinite to Australian accounts or if they will cancel withdrawals as well at a later date?

Would be handy if they still allowed us to withdraw and just block us from playing, VPN would make it accessible and we wouldn't have to mess around with player transfers to withdraw. Would also mean that poker providers would be adhering to the new legislation, I don't see anything anywhere saying they cannot provide any service to us (ie providing withdrawals but not gambling).

Any inside info anyone?

Although the petition may not do much, it gives a good idea of the ramifications of the bill.

Get them to fill out this one if they want to make a difference.

This do this now if you do not want stars to be next. Shocked 888 left pre legislation maybe govt threatened to go after their assets. Contact your mp and liberal senators and ask them to support Joseph del ducas proposal. I'll be telling people at crown today.

You could VPN but risk ban/fund seizure same as us players on stars now. Without a VPN the answer will be no. Contact your mp now.

Anybody who complains but hasn't contacted their mp yet needs to do so immediately. I'll organise a day for a group to show up and protest at tudges Melbourne office when I get a chance over the next week or two. This isn't the end yet the legislation hasn't passed yet. Stop being funking lazy and contact your mp and post any replies you get in thread. Mention Joseph del ducas proposal or use the taxpayers contact form.

Anyone in for tudge office protest lmk I'll organise a time anyone in Melbourne can spare an hour or two. It's far easier to stop this now than after the legislation passes.

I just posted this in the 888 thread;

888 have limp-folded pre-flop to a min-raise (even though they already had money in the pot & were priced in on the small blind) & made a pre-emptive "head for the hills" dash, unnecessarily IMHO as they could at least wait until the Bill passes without "tarnishing" their image. No regulatory authority would punish an organization for staying in a market until a law is passed to say otherwise.

In fact, they could've increased their market-share by becoming a driving force in helping to push through the simple amendment we need to save online poker in Australia.

(Unless of course, the Bill is just the type of "business reevaluation" excuse they needed to exit the market anyway? But that's for another story.)

All the more reason to get someone from PokerStars heavily involved in the discussion, before they turn #pikers too!

You may not have liked or played on 888, but if you're an Aussie & want to keep playing online poker in Australia, GET FIRED UP!!

I urge you to do something about it, today, like sending your local member an email or sign the online petition, or both! To do this, see the ACTION post by JoeyDel on page 48 of the thread "Poker in Australia But For How Long?".

And if you've done that already, share the links with someone on social media, or talk about it at your regular game & get them fired up as well!

The politicians about to make this decision need to hear your voices, now! Don't let this be the worst bad beat you take this year.

Gotta love a poker analogy.

888 poured a lot into Australia, not sure about their player pool but I'd imagine Australia was a fairly decent chunk. Don't you think they possibly have more information than we do and are acting on advice from lawyers/lawmakers/government etc.?

Part of the below sounds like I wrote it for the event poster, & some of it for a blog & podcast I'm putting together, so please forgive any disjointedness.

Location ideas? This would be a live-Sydney based, for now, event, though players from other States, (or countries) could possibly play, rail, commentate or just be there on the day remotely (via Skype).

GRAB-A-SEAT TO SAVE ONLINE POKER IN AUS -
WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
A HOME GAME WITH A PURPOSE.
@SYDNEY, FOR NOW.

Is anyone even remotely interested in this idea of a home game for Aust Day or the Sat or Sun?
Even remotely interested is good!
Ideally we'd have a full table or two, though if it turns out Heads-Up or 3, cool.

GRAB-A-SEAT TO SAVE ONLINE POKER IN AUS -
WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
A HOME GAME WITH A PURPOSE.
@SYDNEY, FOR NOW.

It could be;
- Just a simple BBQ at someone's place, with a home game, only with people you've probably never played before, could even be a bring the family day, or
- A function room at say, a local club or golf club, some of us might want to break the old sticks out before or after the game, or
- An established poker venue that's happy to support the day with a table or 2?, or even,
- An already planned big game on the day that wants to get behind it. Licensed venues will see a drop in numbers as the U.S saw after their Black Friday in 2011, an 8% drop in lower buy-in live tournament attendance.
- To make it a proper poker buffet, dream venue also has a projector with the Twitch streams of Aussie Millions Main Event w/ Jason Somerville, &/or the currently running Man vs Machine challenge #BrainsvsAI .

Anyone up for it?

The previously mentioned donors (or their proxies) are auto-entries & I'd love to see someone from their orgs be there to help spread the event if possible;
- somuchpoker.com
- Pokermedia Australia
- Sydney Daytime Poker
- LCA Poker
- APW Informer

Of course the other's who've donated can have a seat as well.

Otherwise, donate $20 on the day, & come & play to save online poker in Australia. (100% of donations go to the cause).

Meet the people, & play a game with the people who are already on the front foot to make sure we save online poker in Australia.

((If you haven't already heard about it, check out the twoplustwo poker forum on the IGA Bill (goo.gl/vOF0i8) that needs such a small amendment to exclude online poker.
Get familiar with what's already happened, where's it at now, & what's needed next to make that simple amendment happen. Tell your mates about it & do something, anything, it all helps.))

In poker terms;
In Nov last year, we saw THE IGA BILL Flop into Parliament & it's smashed us poker players bigtime, but not in a good way! It ain't lookin' pretty folks!
Now we're postflop & we're playing against the Turn, THE POLITICIANS. They raised it pre-flop & we're out of position, so let's get the initiative back by #GettingBusyOnTheTurn & make them loudly hear our opinions. (See the ACTION LINKS below).
Then when the AMENDMENT hits on the River (could be next month or two??), we take down the massive ONLINE POKER IN AUS pot that's at stake! And can all go back to playing the poker we love.

(Update: @888Poker has now folded in Aust before seeing the Turn!)

If we don't get this AMENDMENT through, we're gonna take the worst of worst bad beats, & that's having no online poker at all.

Swoop:

I visited my local MP's office back in Nov. They had not even heard about this legislation.

I'm going to compile a list of all the countries/players from which I have played against and ask my MP why our politicians believe Australians are incapable of making decisions for themselves, and, why it is our politicians readily rely and trust in our ability to formulate decisions in order to vote them into office, yet we cannot be trusted to handle our own finances and time without their guidance.

Hey guys,

Definitely a sad day.

As has been said the time for complacency is over. Now is the time to act.

CONTACT YOUR MP - If you are serious about online poker this should be non negotiable. Do this and have as many people that you know who are on the electoral roll do this as well.

http://www.taxpayers.org.au/keep_online_poker_legal

LIKE AND SHARE THE FACEBOOK PAGE - www.facebook.com/AustralianOnlinePokerAlliance

We only win these things by making them viral we need as much content out there in people's faces around online poker. You should be liming and posting every post that goes up.

RETWEET EVERY TWEET - Follow @AustOnlinePoker and retweet every tweet for the reasons listed above.

DONATE - I will keep pushing this stuff but it is getting expensive. I am already in for about $500 personally in advertising. I want to do another push of the contact form given these changes.

Also, I have a trip to Adelaide to lobby Nick Xenophon coming up in the first week of February and a trip to Canberra the week after to meet with as many MPs as possible. Anything anyone can spare will go towards advertising and promoting our cause (Transfer to 'JosephDel' on Stars).

OTHER NEWS - I see mention about a fundraising poker tournament above. I have actually started a conversation with the Star yesterday about hosting this there. I also have spoken to a few sporting celebrities about getting involved. Will keep you posted.

Thanks guys, we can't rest now. This will be a lot harder once the other sites pull out. We must act now.

Oh man that is devastating news. ****ing crooked politicians seriously. As a non-Australian I haven't really looked into this but let me just guess; the pokies will stay at every RSL no problem even if online poker is gone?

Anyway has anyone been able to figure out if the 888 poker ban is an IP ban (can't access games when physically in Australia regardless of your citizenship) or a ban so that Australian citizens can't operate accounts?

Obviously asking for selfish reasons as I'm supposed to move down under in 5 days (fffuuuu) and would kinda need to be able to grind poker. My account details are & will remain in Finland, just wondering if I'll be able to play online there or not assuming other sites follow 888's lead.

Sorry for the selfish question, didn't know where else to ask.

GL Australia I really hope you somehow dodge the bullet with some last-second miracle. Let me know if there's anything I can do from outside the borders, I signed all the petition stuff etc already.

All, I just to Tony abbotts office (my electorate): I had a good 20 minute conversation.
My main focus in the conversation was
- I support improved controls to gambling eg stop targeting kids with ads etc
- if regulated, government would get a cut of the revenue and It would ensure our consumers were better protected. I gave the 888 example where 888 only segregate funds for uk residents because they were well regulated
- make the legislation consistent so that all games of skill/chance are treated equally - whether that be poker, sports betting or horse racing
- if the legislation passes, Australian consumers will be left with bottom of the barrel operators who have no concerns with ignoring Australian laws and will continue to spam our most vulnerable gamblers.

Chuck - I'm almost certain it's an IP ban. Email says if you're no longer residing in Australia you can contact them with proof of new address outside of the country and get reinstated. Not sure how they'd track new people coming in but presumably there'll be measures in place similar to Stars in US.

I believe this was received. I don't know your Stars name but there are a couple of $50 transfers today.

As an update we have had $810 USD donated since we started this campaign. Thank you all so much. If anyone else wants to donate please do so. I don't like to ask but the funds are all going towards this campaign (basically being used for Advertising and will help a little bit with travel).

Have had a few interesting people reach out to me today on the back of the 888 announcement so watch this space and hopefully we will have some more news for you shortly.

Keep fighting the good fight!
