Cliffs
4. A Stronger Online Gambling Environment

There are ongoing community concerns that the current laws prohibiting certain forms of online gambling, such as online poker and casino games, are not adequately enforced. Gambling sites illegally offered to Australians do not comply with strict probity requirements and harm minimisation requirements and pose a significant risk to users.

The Coalition will investigate methods of strengthening the enforcement of the Interactive Gambling Act and ensuring Australians are protected from illegal online gambling operators.

The Coalition is concerned that the increasing popularity of sports betting has brought with it an increase in gambling advertising.

We always prefer self-regulation over government regulations, but there are some social problems that, from time to time, demand government attention. We welcome the fact that the industry is moving to ensure that we don't have gambling promotion posing as commentary at sporting events. But they must do more than talk the talk, they have also got to walk the walk.

We will legislate to control gambling advertising if current self-imposed industry regulations prove ineffective.

Maybe its how people interpret it, but from what i read it says an abbott lead government would look into the the legislation of online gambling and if operators arent meeting current conditions of the IGA then they will be banned from operating in this country.

Also another things to add, why would 3 major online bookmakers move into the australian market in the past 6-9 months if the potential for a complete ban to online gambling be introduced if the liberal party wins this election, surely any serious business would have to do some market research about certain regulatiory obligations they might have to meet from both parties in politics before deciding to expand.

I don't think you understand who these people are. They're politicians. You can't just use logic against them - it doesn't work!

the government has a point. if the country has a gambling problem then maybe its for the best that everyone cant access gambling from their homes/mobile devices. just because a few make a living from it doesnt negate the fact that it ruins significantly more lifes. further to this they dont gain any revenue from it wheras pokies etc is a poor mans tax that be used by the government. the best solution is to set time/money limits to pokies use and ban all forms of online gambling.

The Interactive Gaming Act bans primarily casino-type games, including online poker. It does not apply to sports betting (though there are some issues with 'in-play' betting (because 'in play' is 'interactive')), horse racing or lotteries.

'Strengthening enforcement' of the IGA means enforcing the ban.

It won't happen immediately after the election. The Coalition have a range of other priorities. There is a chance it may drop off their legislative agenda completely.

But, their stated policy is to enforce the ban on online poker. It could happen within a few months, in particular if Nick Xenophon has an influential position in the senate.

The smartest thing to do is some risk management. Consider options for overseas, consider contingencies should it happen. Don't pack your bags just yet, just do some planning.

The liberals probably won't ban online poker for 2 reasons.

http://www.liberal.org.au/helping-problem-gamblers
1. On it's gambling policy it writes this:

Quote:
The Productivity Commission looked at the economic, social, workforce, tourism, online and harm-related aspects of Australia’s gambling industry. However, the Labor Government has neglected the opportunity to work with industry and the states on a whole-of-industry (as opposed to “pokies-only”) strategy to tackle problem gambling that also recognises the legitimate right of adults to gamble responsibly.
2. The productivity commission points out issues with banning and from my reading the cost/benefit analysis leans towards regulation (or "liberalisation" as it call it). And by regulation I mean "harm minimization" for problem gamblers like mandatory options of self-exclusion or therapy advertising. (pokerstars already has self-exclusion options afaik)

Also, I'd like to point at the the "skill debate" was also discussed in the productivity commission report aswell.

http://www.liberal.org.au/helping-problem-gamblers

wonder if these dolts even know stars have responsible gambling options including being able to set limits of buy ins, tables played, temporary exclusion and permanent exclusion.

Does anyone know if Malcom Turnbull has an opinion on this, he might be someone good to contact, I wonder if he could influence Abbot anyway?

@OP - I think you are scaremongering a bit saying only three weeks of poker left only, even if they were to do something to stop online poker, it would be part of a wider gambling package which tackles sports, and pokies too, which could take quite a while, there will definitely be more important issues imo in front of that, and hopefully by then, they could sway their view to some alternate, i dont care if they ban **** sites like merge and titan poker and stuff, just leave stars and ftp and I will be happy.
**** i wish people could read, im not scaremongering, incase u didnt realise i didnt write the article, im quoting the article. Whether its legit or not ive no fkn clue, but fairly sure ive posted this in the correct area news, views and GOSSIP if it is only that its where it should be.

I understand those things are everywhere. In the UK it was nigh on 10 years ago when fruities where banned from unlicensed places like chip shops. Are there similar restrictions on pokies?
wouldnt hurt if they were known as slot machines rather than poker machines in this country

in all honesty unless your making 80-100k a year playing poker in oz its probably not the best career choice and even at that its still not that great given the cost of living and the increasing fragility and decline of the poker economy which the possibility of australia pulling out epitomises.

you can get that salary and more pretty easily working as a professional or even on the mines with holiday pay, loads of public paid holidays and superannuation on top with career avenues for progression and more $ with a good retirement while the $ you can make at poker diminishes all the time.

fair enough if your young and wanna spend a few years as your own boss but you would be better off living elsewhere anyway with more disposable income and putting some in the bank for the future.
