There is no plan. I can't see any way that regulated legal online poker will ever return to Australia. Bad faith actors and over-promisers sabotaged the campaign before it even begun. The grassroots movement we might have been able to form were told to wait and be patient and blah blah blah. Now it's dead in the water and the vast majority have simply moved on from poker.

Not trying to be negative, just how I see it.

Hard to argue. It's pretty ****ed up of Joey to just leave us high and dry without so much as a "I am too busy to lead this charge any longer" comment. Really disappointing. This thing is dead in the water. Lucky we can go play pokies in safe and regulated VIP rooms at 2am on a sunday morning otherwise who know what I would do.

Why would the Flutter group (the parent company of PokerStars) want to rock the boat, given they already have a product (Sportsbet) in Australia now?

They didn’t (appear to) help when we had momentum in 2017, so I can’t imagine they have any reason to do it now. If we could generate some interest, that might make it attractive for Flutter to do something, but not the way it is now.

New Survey
Here is a new gambling survey (https://cquta.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/...byKHmFsKiBpzXn) for those who are interested.
Additional details about the survey cab be found at https://www.cqu.edu.au/about-us/stru...ellbeing-study.
It looks like the researchers are putting together a panel of gamblers for further surveys & their associated research.

The Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI)
The survey contains a set of questions called the PGSI. The PGSI is used by gambling researchers to “measure” whether you are a “problem gambler”, as defined by gambling researchers.
You can find an example of these questions here, https://responsiblegambling.vic.gov....ity-index-pgsi. If you score “high,” you would be categorized in their research as a problem gambler.
If you were going to do any gambling survey, you should be familiar with the PGSI.

CQUniversity Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory (EGRL)
The survey is from one of the leading gambling research organizations in Australia. This doesn’t mean that they don’t do “dodgy” research, but their research is used by governments, politicians & bureaucrats who read their work, make rules and gambling regulations.

If you don’t participate in these studies, then you can’t complain about researchers who create the dodgy studies

If you want further info, then don’t hesitate to DM me.

Not directly relevant to the thread but former Communications Minister Alan Tudge just resigned from the ministry. He was thoroughly unhelpful to us during his tenure as communications minister and seems to generally be a scumbag so it's nice to see his career going down in #metoo flames. Porter and Hunt gone too this week, well overdue in Porter's case.

We might be starting over with Labor next year at this rate since the coalition is doing their absolute best to lose what should have been an easy election. If that happens i'll reach out to the one Labor contact I have and see if we can at least get their position on online poker although i'm not personally the right person to lead this fight will do my best to be helpful wherever possible

This shouldn't really affect poker sites, since any offering access to Australian residents are already breaking the law. I guess this is targeted at legitimate sports betting sites?

and sports betting sites you can already deposit via Poli/Bank wire/Bpay etc so doesn't really affect that either beyond making it mildly less convenient

For the sports bettors in this thread:

I’m currently looking at a piece of research, Accuracy of self-reported gambling frequency and outcomes: Comparisons with account data ( https://psyarxiv.com/5hs7j)

It states that the transaction history and the CSV files of the transaction history used by an Australian gambling website (which I suspect is Ladbrokes) do not contain dates and times of transactions.

I have never seen this on any gambling website that I have ever had an account on.

Can anybody who has an account on an Australian sports betting gambling website (except TABCORP/Tatts) DM about whether the site they use has dates/times or doesn’t have dates on the transaction dates of their transaction history.

There's a good possibility either party won't be getting a majority in next years Federal election and comes down to the independents to form Govt and with Andrew Wilkie being one of them then the chances of online poker returning becoming even more remote.

Key point here is that this is strictly for credit cards, debit cards would act as normal.

Have no issue whatsoever with regulating against accepting essentially borrowed money to gamble.

Agree, I'm surprised that this ban hasn't been implemented earlier to be fair - clubs, bars and gaming venues aren't allowed to provide credit to customers to gamble, so I don't see why the same shouldn't apply to banks

There is a new gambling prevalence paper, “Gambling prevalence and gambling problems amongst land-based-only, online-only and mixed-mode gamblers in Australia: A national study) which looks at the characteristics of land-based-only gamblers (LBOGs), online-only gamblers (OOGs), and mixed-mode gamblers (MMGs)”.

It shows that mixed-mode gamblers (MMGs) had the highest rate of problem gambling (5.1%) when compared to land-based-only gamblers (LBOGs), which had a PG rate of 1.4% and online-only gamblers (OOGs) which had a rate of (0.7%). So gambling only on online forms of gambling, i.e. online sports betting, online race-betting & online poker, is safer than gambling on other forms of gambling.

The paper can be found here, https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...dgcid=coauthor. There are 50 free copies, so gambling researchers will have to pay for a copy if we all download a copy.

Note this study is a repeat of a 2014 study that came to the same conclusion.

What is the point of this study? Of course problem gamblers seek out more opportunities to gamble.

FYI: ACMA takes alleged online gambling (Poker) service providers to Federal Court

"This action follows a detailed ACMA investigation into the prohibited online gambling services, which originally operated under the name ‘PPPfish’, but subsequently rebranded to ‘Shuffle Gaming’ and later ‘Redraw Poker’. "

"The ACMA alleges that, since 2 March 2020, the services provided by Jones and then Diverse Link offered Australians the ability to play poker online for money. Players join poker clubs through a mobile app, can then purchase chips from separate websites, via bank transfer or bitcoin, which are then credited to their account in the poker club and can be used to play poker. Chips can then be redeemed for money or bitcoin."

Has there been any forward progress in any way helping legalise online poker? I know over the last year or so there has been more done to “control gambling” by limiting the amount you can deposit, imposing self bans etc. Poker is the only gambling product in which there is a large amount of skill involved which can drastically impact your results, you have no control on outcomes in horse betting, sports betting, pokies or betting on lotto etc. i just feel like this is a very straight forward issue and anyone with two brain cells would retroactively change the bill and reinstate poker legally. Do we have any Mp’s or anyone battling for the poker community who’s in a position of power who can help push this agenda? Just feels like we have had no progression the last few years, I’m sure it’s very frustrating for all of us.
