Hey guys,

As Swoop suggested above, he just contacted me and asked me to provide an update. I should have done this a while ago but I was holding out for some good news... it isn't coming.

The legislation we need passed has been sitting on the Minister's desk for the past few months. It just needed to go to Cabinet to be approved and then would have headed for the house.

Despite this being ready for a long time we have not been able to get it onto the floor of parliament. Put simply, between leadership spills, infighting and byelections there just wasn't any time to do actual governing.

Our hope of getting to the top of the policy list was Senator Leyonhjelm who could use his position to leverage the Government.

However, he has announced that he is going to run for the NSW Legislative Council (which he of course is welcome to do) meaning we lose this opportunity.

Simply put, without Leyonhhelm there to pressure the issue it seems unlikely that we have enough sitting weeks left to get this through before the election.

So, as frustrating as this seems, we need to look forward to the next government - regardless of what party they are from.

I am confident that we have enough support from both Liberal and Labor to get this through regardless of who forms the next government and we still hold the support if a significant number of crossbench Senators who will help us to achieve the right outcome when we do get a vote on this.

My view is that we are best off waiting until the election campaign. I will personally be writing to every candidate to ask their position on online poker (as I have done with all Liberal Party preselections I have been involved in). We will make these positions known publicly and I urge you to use this when making your choice on election day and asking others to do the same.

We will push for online poker through the whole election and will continue to do so once the new government is formed.

I know many in this thread have been disappointed by the silence and the perceived lack of action. It is your right to feel this way but I believe it was the right thing to do and I would have done the same again if given the opportunity, so I just want to speak about that briefly.

The legislation was never going to see the light of day unless it was going to pass. I.e if we aren't going to win a vote we won't have one. We were (and still are) confident that we have the numbers for this to pass if it does reach the floor of parliament.

The only risk to this voting majority was if the anti gambling forces caught wind of it and started to fight the issue publicly. In order for this to pass, we needed a quick, debate free bill that was only in parliament for a matter of second - not a long drawn out battle.

Given this we decided to keep the conversations quiet. Now, whether that is right or wrong is a debate for another time but I just wanted to share the reasoning for this with you.

An election changes things considerably and we should (and will) fight for air time as this heats up.

Thanks for your support. Feel free to do what you think is right now but I call on all of you to be ready to kick the campaign into overtime once an election is called.

Joey

Thanks Joey. Any comments on what the proposed legislation looks like? Will it be a blanket exemption in the IGA for sites offering online poker? Or will it be providing the possibility for overseas operators to obtain an Australian gaming licence?

Odds on getting poker back before Scoop this year! Usually held in May off the top of my head! Its unlikely isn't it?

Yes it's unlikely but not impossible - basically the government would have to make online poker a priority - they're in favour of doing it, it's just at the bottom of their to-do list because they're dysfunctional and trying not to get wrecked when they almost inevitably lose government in a few months

Fortunately our bill seems to be fairly popular across the political spectrum so hopefully we can get something passed this year regardless of who is in government.

So, Swoop do you know if around election time Joey can post a blanket letter we can all copy and write to local governments during election times so we can all appear to be a "united front" to get the bill passed easier? I'm happy to fire an email in every direction I can at election time to get this bill passed but I cant write official sounding letters.

How does the upcoming federal election effect us? At this stage it looks like the coalition might not hold onto power, is this good or bad for us... Should I be rooting for Labour?

Well now i feel like a dick when I was just trying to help.

But srsly give WPN a go if you can make an account. Ignition works too but I dont enjoy the anonymity of it. Even if I know Im versing regs it helps me to be better if I can beat them and know I did.
