Bonus link for police brutality against disabled pensioner for no reason, and not being stood down, and something only being done because said disabled pensioner had a home security camera. Police corruption isn't just a US problem.
It's the Victorian police, he was lucky not to be shot.

Leyonhjelm still intends to hold his hearing into it, i'm not sure on the timeline but I was told July a month or two ago. Also the LNP were holding a vote onto whether to include online poker in their platform in QLD recently, i'm sure Joey would have more updates than me on that front

Cliffs: it might happen, but it's definitely not going to be implemented until at least next year if it does

Update

I Spoke with Senator Leyonhjelm directly today. Things are moving again and he's going to need our help to get this legislation passed to legalise and regulate online poker in Australia. He has confirmed that the government has a bill in the works but haven't made it a priority to date and with the possibility that they could lose government next year we need to move it up their priority list to ensure it passes in time, so it's time for us to apply some pressure to Senator Fifield who is the key figure in moving this bill as the Minister for Communications and show him that we the Australian poker community care about getting this bill passed. I have spoken with Joey Del and we're putting together an action plan for the AOPA.

I expect that Joey will post a more substantial update shortly, along with a targeted action plan. It's going to involve calls and emails by us, the players, and possibly more submissions. I'll leave the details to Joey who understands the inner workings of politics and the LNP more than I do, but very positive news today with the Senator taking time to reach out to me directly today about the proposed online poker legislation, especially when he's dealing with a media ****storm over an unrelated issue, so it's clear this really is important to him to get this passed THIS term of government and that we should help him in any way that we can in doing so.

Exact action plan will be posted soon by Joey, and I assume he will be sending out emails to the Australian Online Poker Alliance.

Also good luck to all of the Aussies currently in the WSOP ME, it's be awesome if one of our own won it this year as we rally the troops for the next few months. We need to show Fifield and the LNP that this is an issue we will vote on, and given they're in serious danger of losing government next year according to the polls, they need to show the poker players of Australia that they're willing to pass common sense legislation if we are going to consider giving them our support when their government is judged at the ballot box.

We said the fight isn't over, and the next six months is going to be very key in determining whether online poker is legal in Australia again prior to the end of this government's current term which is due to end sometime next year. Be ready when the call is made, we have a legitimate chance to win this and get this legislation passed - the government is open to it and has a bill in progress, and Leyonhjelm is ready to make it a priority so long as we give him our support in pressuring Fifield and the LNP to get this passed as a priority.

Hey guys,

Long time since we have spoken. There have been a couple of reasons for this.

Firstly, we had some very positive meetings with the relevant Government Minister as well as Senator Leyonhjelm and some other supporters in Canberra at the start of this year/end of last year.

At the time, it seemed that everyone was on the same page and that we would be working towards reform that brought online poker back to Australia around the middle of the calendar year (i.e now).

For that reason, the plan was to cool off efforts for a little bit because it didn't seem reasonable to expect the community to remain active and passionate for a full 6-8 months so we were going to cool off and then when things got closer pick up the pace again.

Fast forward to now and we haven't gotten any closer than that point. Let me be clear though, there is still an appetite for change and I believe if we can get a vote to occur in parliament we can get the numbers to win it has more been a matter of competing priorities. Whilst the Minister's office agrees that we need to make some changes, it is hard to get the government excited enough to actually do something, especially with an election looming.

For that reason, we need to get ourselves back on the agenda so we will be looking to kickstart things again now to that effect.

As Swoop mentioned, we will be putting a full campaign plan together and as always the poker playing community will form an integral part of this campaign.

I will start putting something together over the coming days but our main objective is going to be ensuring that the Minister, and other key decision makers in the Government, put our issue at the top of the agenda.

As per the last campaign, this isn't going to take a lot of work from everyone but rather a lot of people doing a little bit of work. If we can all commit five to ten minutes a day to this that will be a great start and we will really be able to build from there.

We will start marshaling out jobs and activities shortly so if you haven't already

1) go to the webpage and register your email address for email updates - http://australianonlinepokeralliance.com.au/

2) like our Facebook page and like and share the post updates that we make (here is one from today) - https://www.facebook.com/AustralianO...type=3&theater

3) If you have a particular idea/suggestion or skill - please let me know and we will work out how best to utilise it. This is a team effort and the more ideas from the community the better. You can contact me - joseph@australianonlinepokeralliance.com.au

4) Stay tuned to this thread for further updates.

Good news from one of our own fighting within the LNP to get the party onboard

Update below

Great news for online poker on the weekend. The Queensland Liberal National Party passed the following policy at their annual state convention in the week:

"That this Convention of the LNP calls on the Federal Coalition Government to amend the
Interactive Gambling Act 2001 to establish regulated access to online poker in Australia."

This makes it the formal position of the Queensland branch of the party and will help the argument in favour by Federal cabinet.

No party member including Politicians spoke against. Several LNP politicians are clear supporters.

Thanks to Chris McLoughlin who has led the work to get the Queensland LNP onboard to adopt our position, he's a proud AOPA member and a good friend of mine and likely a future member of parliament.

We're going to put an action plan into place shortly, but basically we want to lobby Fifield and certain other LNP politicians to get this moving prior to the election.

Side note, 3 Aussies still going in WSOPME with decent stacks with 178 left; would be cool if Obst, Lynskey or Bain can win the whole thing. Would definitely help our cause with favourable publicity in the media if any of them can TID.

This might sound silly, but i still think there are good % of politicans, that don't know the difference between the "pokies" and poker, even though there are no similarities between the two, i think we should make a point of what the difference is, so we can be clear that we aren't the game that spins numbers on a screen

Magicians, we did, during the senate hearing. We explained it. They understood eventually, the key is for the politicians who don't get it to speak with one of the Senators who was on the committee looking into the issue. You're right, most politicans won't know or care one way or the other, but in Australia the major parties vote as a bloc, and Fifield is now the head of that bloc when it comes to our issue since he's the Minister for Communications. If this is a priority for him, it will happen.

Basically we just need Fifield on board and this happens. The LNP will vote as a bloc, and we have support from Leyonhjelm, Hinch and One Nation on the crossbench and Whish Wilson from the Greens seemed at least open to the idea during the Senate hearings, and that's without even knowing how Labor will vote, all we need is the LNP and the crossbench and it passes.

Like and share the AOPA post and contact Fifield directly letting him know that online poker should be legal in Australia, you expect the government to pass legislation THIS term and that his own party agrees, the QLD LNP have officially passed a resolution agreeing that online poker should be legal and regulated in Australia. We're literally asking him to pass his own political party's policy platform now.

http://mitchfifield.com/Contact.aspx

Senator Fifield can be emailed at the link above. Get in touch and let him know you expect him to make this happen this term of government if you are going to consider giving him your support.

Also like/share the most recent post from the Australian Online Poker Alliance page.

This isn't some hail mary 1% chance thing. This is more like a coinflip, the LNP has actually adopted our position at state level now, we just need to show Fifield that the public actually cares about this. If we don't get it done this term though, we'll have to start the process over with a new Labor government if they win and they're the favs to at the moment in the polling, so it's important we act on this now and contact Fifield to get this rolling as we're potentially less than a year away from an election.

Take 5 minutes and email Fifield. Leyonhjelm, Joey, Chris, etc are all doing what they can behind the scenes to make this happen

There are other politicians who are key too, and we will contact them when the time comes. For now, we're contacting Senator Fifield to make him aware that we exist, that his party in QLD adopted legal online poker into their platform at the recent convention and that we expect to see him act on that this term in government if he wants our votes.

Update: hold off a little bit on contacting Fifield for now, let's let Joey and the AOPA co-ordinate a day or week specifically for us all to do it, more effective if we all contact them en masse during a designated time period.

I've been a bit busy the last couple weeks and obv the Libs have been a bit busy going full leadership meltdown too so passing new legislation hasn't exactly been on their agenda. I'll have a chat with Joey sometime this week and figure out what our timeline is now that we have a new PM etc

WPN appears to be leaving the Aussie market now..

Quote:
On August 9th, 2016 the Australian parliament passed the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill, effectively banning all online gambling sites that are not locally licensed under Australian State or Territory law.

For this reason, The Winning Poker Network does not allow customers from Australia to play at any of our existing poker sites (Americas Cardroom, Black Chip Poker, Ya Poker, True Poker, Poker King).

i sent them an email to confirm and recieved this:

Joe Hachem was on Joey's podcast last week and said he'd heard from very well placed sources that legislation was due to go through this year and online poker is expected to be back by mid next year.

No idea how reliable that is but he said it.

I hope he's right. I know we made some progress with the QLD LNP getting on board but given the party is melting down right now over leadership we'd be at the bottom of their priority list. I haven't heard a specific update recently. Hopefully Joey can provide an update shortly.
