That might apply to other countries, but less so in Australia.
I'm reluctant to get into much of a historical debate on this issue, but traditionally, the various "right" of Australian politics has been much more pro-gambling than left-wing groups (which see gambling as big businesses taking advantage of victims).
Some key points:
-The Federal ban on online gaming was introduced by the Howard Government, but only as part of a deal with Brian Harradine for his vote in favour of the GST
-"Right-wing" organisations like the Institute of Public Affairs are much more supportive of allowing people to gamble than organisations like Get Up, etc.
It's certainly not clear-cut (as there have certainly been some Liberal/Coalition policies that have been unhelpful).
