Thanks for sharing. Reading now.

So what happens next exactly? Who is the report tabled to?

Thanks Lazza.

While the Senate didn't say "**** yeah legalise online poker", they didn't say ban it. Seems like the report is more on the positive side?

Thoughts from some more well-versed political people in this forum?

Hmm.. not sure how what will happen now.. the evidence in this report is ridiculously in favour, yet from what i gathered it seems like when they said more research in the recommendations they're still not sure.. I'm no expert at this, but aside from the vague recommendations it seems generally positive, stuff we already know but written on paper.. I suppose it comes down to the senators horse trading, should work if they still had doubts when the government read this in full. Though it seems like it'll be really lengthy, years lengthy. Sense of urgency doesn't seem high.

You can skip to section 4, the first three sections are basically a summary of what has happened so far and cliffnotes of the submissions/hearings. I'd say important cliffs are below
Quote:
4.3 The committee is of the view that harm minimisation and consumer protection should be of primary importance when regulating the online gambling industry. As such, the committee supports the efforts of the Australian Government to ensure that the impacts of gambling-related harms on the community are reduced, and that Australian consumers are protected.
Quote:
4.15 The Australian Government has acknowledged the need for a strong national consumer protection framework and has undertaken significant work to implement such a scheme to protect users of online gambling services. The Department of Social Services noted that the implementation of such a scheme is absolutely vital before any kind of liberalisation of the online gambling market.
They also explain that a lot more research in potential benefits/harms needs to be done. They only have two recommendations:
Quote:
4.19 The committee commends the Australian Government's efforts to implement strong consumer protection measures, and harm minimisation strategies. The committee recommends that any future consideration of the legalisation of online poker should only occur following the complete implementation of the National Consumer Protection Framework.

4.20 The committee recommends that the Department of Social Services support research into the impact of regulatory approaches on online poker, including the relative benefits and harms associated with prohibition and legalisation.
Which the government will respond to, either agreeing to all/one/none of the recommendations and moving forward from there.

I'd say the cliffs of the cliffs: online poker's return won't be discussed until the National Consumer Protection Framework has been completely implemented. Last I heard they wanted this to be done by the end of the year but lol at the government getting something done on time.

Thanks Bazooka.

Does the gov have a certain response time based on the findings?

As a community we should be very proud of our work here.

Some really good submissions from the Australian poker community and a lot of it was referenced in this report.

I have a meeting booked in with Minister Fifield at the end of this month to talk about the next steps. I will provide more information on that shortly.

Thank you everyone for your amazing effort.

You can see a list of 2017 responses here, unfortunately there's no set time limit on these responses as far as I'm aware. As you can see some take a few months, some take several years or even longer.

Great to hear Joey, and as always thanks and massive props for the ongoing work

The report seems more like a summary of the arguments presented than any real course of action. It seems like a setback that we need to wait for the consumer protection framework thing to be done before anything happens and
'we need more research' is definitely a cop out. Looking forward to hearing what Leyonhjelm has to say as well as Joey after the Fifield meeting

Joey if there's anything we can do prior to the Fifield meeting to help our cause let us know.

Possibly wishful thinking but remembering the context, we heard that Senator Leyonhjelm made a deal with the Liberal Party to support the Media ownership changes in return for support for Online Poker.
Leyonhjelm and Bernardi came out very strongly in favour of online poker after hearing all the evidence so hopefully the "Media ownership for online poker" deal stands.

It wasn't a deal for support for online poker, it was a deal to get a department to do preliminary work on the feasibility of Australian providers getting a licence to operate online poker sites

Is there any timeline for the consumer protection thing?

So I ended up making a large deposit to ACR using bitcoin = to 1k usd.

My question is: when I want to cash out will they pay me out in the amount of bitcoins I have in my account or the USD value I have in my account? They say on their site:

'We remind you that BitCoin is a currency that has constant fluctuations, so you might see differences in the amount sent and received due to currency conversions'

So if bitcoins value goes up substantially then I should be getting paid out more?

Your bitcoin deposit is converted into USD, when you withdraw you convert USD into bitcoin at the current market rate

Honestly not having a go, but its probably not the best idea to discuss this stuff in aus forum. It might tempt the govt to ban bitcoin next.

lol @ banning bitcoin being possible with VPNs or even without them, unlike online poker there's no way all the exchanges/wallets stop accepting Australian customers anyway. The whole idea of bitcoin is that it's a currency without borders, even if a country bans it it's super easy to circumvent that ban (much easier than poker)

I really doubt anyone from the Australian government is reading this thread looking at ways to make it harder for us to play online poker.

Technically they can ban bitcoin. They just won’t be able to enforce the ban, and we will be able to transact offshore.

We don’t want it banned, it will limit its usefulness.

Though I don’t think this is likely to happen.

They're not going to ban Bitcoin, certain not while the government has recently made changes to stop double taxation on bitcoin use.
