Good riddance, the Taj was a dive. Ugly inside and out. It also doesn't help that the best casino in AC (Borgata) is nowhere near the boardwalk.

I visited AC a year ago and I actually ended up regretting the drive on my zip car. The Parx casino in PA is not only closer from manhattan but it's also cleaner and safer. AC was built on the premise that it would have monopoly on gaming in the east coast. Now that that status quo has changed, i don't think it will ever be able survive under the new economic model/norm of gaming market in the east coast.

Good point. I still think A.C. has some life left in it, though.
IF they did it right and cleaned up the whole area, they could at least maintain some decent profits with a few really nice casinos. If the entire BW did what Revel was trying to do, the right way, it could be a beautiful, beachfront destination too.

You can almost forget that you're in A.C. when looking out of the window in one of Revel's ocean-facing rooms. Then, you look right, and remember real quick.
When they were promoting the grand-opening, A.C. was jumping again. Everyone I know was looking to book rooms in the new spot. If the entire BW was like that, (I think/hope) it could become a really profitable destination again. Maybe steal back some of that NY,CT,PA business.

But I agree it's not the same situation as Macau, didn't realize it was the only place where gambling is allowed out there.

They're definitely in some serious debt, FYE report last year finally revealed how much. I think they're prob regretting opening the MGM, but idk if the entire property is on it's last legs, yet.

Wild Wild West, which also has a new poker room.

I don't know what they're going to do with the Revel, Trump, 'Boat, and probably Taj properties, but there are already plans to turn the Atlantic Club into a non-gaming hotel. The closing of these casinos will only help the remaining 8 survive.

AC isn't what it used to be but they still have something all of these nowhere (PA, MD, CT, WV, DE) states don't have: a boardwalk and beach. They also have online gaming revenue.

The Taj has a bunch of really good memories for me. Years back a friend and I would make trips weekly to play in the booming midnight madness tournament. It would routinely get 100 runners. It was a lower limit buy in and we would enjoy the atmosphere. Watching the little groups of grinders do their thing lol and witnessing the hookers walking in from the street was always fun. About a year ago after not going in a long time we decided to make the trip again. When I asked the floor about the midnight tournament he almost laughed. I guess it doesn't run or if it does it may be a table or two. Left in disgust and hit the borgata. I also miss the Caesars 2/5nl games. Again, years ago those games were incredible. Oh well.

this should not be a surprise to anyone

the Taj has been a dump for over a decade & the poker room has blown for years

anyway, A.C. will likely have only 2 to 3 casinos within the next 5 years & that is just economics

I remember sweating the 10/15nl game like it was an episode of high stakes poker.

Also sweating a super high stakes limit hold em game at Taj. 10 plus years ago. Middle aged white guy vs a younger Asian kid with a huge Asian rail. Literally had clear plastic bags full of money. Watched for 20 mins without seeing a flop.

As pointed out in the article, he could divest himself of his remaining interest and that implies it would force them to remove his name.

I still fondly remember the years the USPC was on TV.

According to article, Trump still owns 9% of Trump Entertainment. His PR is spinning him as far away from this as possible.

Only reasons to play at the Taj in recent years was nostalgia with the "Rounders" connection, and the US Poker Championships.

For a look at what a tournament was like Pre-Moneymaker (This one is from 2000). Notice that the Limit Events far exceeded the NLHE events. Never will happen again.

This one dealer would never let you borrow chips from another player at the table. I tried to explain that we were all friends, and I even gave the table a chance to object, and she STILL said I had to buy them from her. Dude I was borrowing from was my best friend!

I think I am pretty representative of people who used to go to AC. I live in Maryland, outside of Washington DC and used to make the 3 1/2 hour drive to AC five or six times a year. I was comped rooms at the Taj and played in their poker room and also played tournaments next door at the Showboat. I hated the drive, felt unsafe one block from the boardwalk and was disgusted walking on the boardwalk. I went to AC for one reason- to play poker legally in a casino. When the Delaware Park poker room opened, my trips to AC became once or twice a year. There were no tournaments at the Taj. And last year when the poker room opened at Maryland Live, a 16 mile drive from my house, I knew that my poker playing in AC was coming to an end. Competition by casinos in neighboring states is killing AC. I for one, have no reason to go there any more.

Sums it up in a cash game poker player's nutshell. Why go to AC if there's a game 16 miles away?

All a poker player wants is a table with an open seat with multiple players less effective than you. Simple and straight forward. And, if you have a bad night, your own bed is less than a half hour away with less time to think about it.

Maybe a Tournament Series will draw, but Borgata can get you there only 3 times a year and WSOP, maybe 2 MAX. But that is making an assumption that you have the bankroll and desire to participate. Poker Players are not the core that AC wants and never was. Too demanding, too knowledgeable about the pitfalls of the other games, looking for +EV.

The draw to AC has to be more than the game for any one more than 50 miles away. What will draw you there for a prolonged stay is the question AC is asking? You can't have free beach concerts that draw 60K or an airshow that draws hundreds of thousands weekly. You can only do so much shopping. Good Restaurants are every where. Concert artists perform all over.

Too many entertainment options closer to home that saves the gas, tolls or airline ticket. And ..... the cost of the room if you aren't comped.

Besides, the bad PR that AC has been spewing for years - Harrah's Security Force, Taj Murder in the Casino, Abductions in the Parking Lots, even the Ray Rice video -has turned off who knows how many potential visitors.

So, the east coast monopoly, is long gone, never to return. Consolidation and gambling retraction will continue. RIP Boardwalk Empire. Just a potentially nice, local resort location that had its day.

Update of Bankruptcy Hearing. The thread name may be premature.

One thing that was said is that: "The company, whose Trump Plaza resort is closing in a week, sought bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. It is working with various entities controlled by Icahn to shore up its liquidity and trying to win concessions from union workers, and has threatened to close the Taj Mahal on Nov. 13 if it can't stabilize its financial situation."

So, it is NOT in stone that the Taj will close. YET.

Carl Icahn Company is involved - deep pockets if he sees a way to make out on the deal. Governor Christie has made the bold statement that the Trump Taj Mahal will NOT close. The Union says it has rejected the takeaways that TE has proposed.

Friday IS the go date for the issuing of WARN letters to make the November 13th date a possibility. Taj employees will report if this happens on Friday.

I would be inclined to disagree with this statement. Just like "a rising tide lifts all boats", the opposite is true as well. It's probably no coincidence that The casinos are closing in a row like falling dominoes.

Analysts would probably agree that it wouldn't be to the Borgata's advantage to be the only casino located in a burnt out shell of a city.

I remember thinking to myself that the Taj was circling the drain when I was there for my bachelor party 5 years ago. 10 of us standing around a $10 craps table being told that players of that level can only order Bud Light draft or GTFO.
We GTFO.

I honestly believe that Donald Trump is the reason why TER (Trump Entertainment Resorts) may go under. Donald hasn't done any good for Atlantic City throughout the 90s and 2000s. All of his properties are outdated and were in needed of dire help and only one of his properties were sold off while the other two are going under (Trump Marina which is now Golden Nugget). Donald only has himself to blame for the failure of his own casino entertainment company.
