A basic fail re. the western USA. It's not anything like the eastern USA.
A look at the Electoral College map is a great start: Florida and NY have a total of 58 electoral votes, which is more than the combined total of 11 States, including NV, located west of the Mississippi and east of Cali.
The western USA east of Cali is quite desolate and for good reason, mostly water. If LV dies, it won't be because of competition, it will be because of drought.

In 2012, the United States Border Patrol found the remains of 463 migrants in the US, of which 177 were discovered along the section of the border near Tucson, Arizona. The Rio Grande Valley of South Texas reported 150 migrant remains found, a jump from 2011 due to the increased numbers of Central American migrants..."
And:

The hottest air temperature ever recorded in Death Valley was 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913, at Furnace Creek, which is the hottest atmospheric temperature ever recorded on earth. During the heat wave that peaked with that record, five consecutive days reached 129 °F (54 °C) or above. Some meteorologists dispute the accuracy of the 1913 temperature measurement..."
