Once won a huge pot on a 2- outer on river. Tells dealer, "I would tip you but I did all the work..."

Grizzle busted in 17th, I wonder if his tournament winnings may have also mysteriously disappeared already.

I played with Sam for about 6 hours last week, and without knowing anything else about him besides what I saw, he's a stand-up guy in my book.

Soon after I sat at the table with him, two new players who were friends, recognized him and instantly started hating on him. One of them said "Not only is he mean, he intends to hurt people." Sam took it in stride, and made some semi-mean but clearly good natured remarks to other people who clearly knew him, and he told some lady walking by (who I later confirmed is a long-time pro), about how cold the AC was and how she should put a jacket on, and without missing a beat she laughed back and said "Sam I think that's the first time you've ever recommended I put ON clothes."

A few hours in, with the two guys continuing the insults, I piped up and said that I've only been playing with Sam for a few hours, but so far he hasn't said or done anything that didn't deserve to be said or done, while on the other hand you two guys (who I confirmed had not met/played with him before either) have been continually insulting a man you don't know. They were quiet for a bit, but started up again later, but Sam instantly started chatting with me from then on.

More than once he mentioned how the Bible just says to ignore people like that, and how the Bible has lots of good advice, and he also talked a lot about his kids and how one of them is married and his kid and his kid's wife are both super young, but he's really proud of them blah blah blah being a dad is great.

So Seattle Times article or no, I think from the way he was talking about his kids that he's a good dad. And with only my experience with him, and all his Bible quotes, and how he acted at the table I was at, I consider him to be a decent guy. The two guys ridiculing him brought up him punching Hellmuth, and his only response was "what can I say, he had it coming".

So with a grand total of six hours sitting next to and chatting with Sam Grizzle, I consider him a stand-up guy. He did hint at me that staking him for an event would be a good investment, so I'm guessing all the amazing degen stories are true, but he was never pressuring or out of line to me or anybody else.

Def a degen, but a decent enough guy imo.

How does being able to quote the Bible equate to being a good person?

Hit and ran my 20-40 few months ago. Terrible limit player. Said he was trying to raise funds to deposit on pokerstars. Said "I never win on that site, but I love to play it." Was running like god, calling 3bets from the small blind with 96o ect and catching boats. Every time he'd win a pot he'd say "ohhhhh pokkkerstarsss." Was actually pretty funny and nice, but most people are when they can't lose a pot. Also had a funny quote "I never play with my own money. My daddy told me don't play with your own money cause you might lose it." Had me wondering who is the person that backs this guy? Now I'm wondering who backed him in a limit event which has a pretty tough field, when he admits that hes a terrible limit hold em player.

imo sam is hilarious and good for the game. i love to play at his tables. he always calls me peckerwood. if ur ever at the table with him when he's "dialing for dollars" its something to behold. hell dial up 20 people in a row telling each he has won them "millions", nearly every call will end in a big argument. nearly, every call. at some point hell catch a fish and be off to the tournament entry desk.

this is all true about sam grizzle and worst, ive lived the nightmare for 9 yrs and we brought a innocent child in to this mess,it is march 18,2008 me and my 7 yr old daughter have to leave our rented home today we've been evicted and she's been withdrawn out of her school for non-payment.we have no money and nowhere to go,sam snuck out yesterday never to return and left me and our daughter literally stranded on the streets to fend for ourselfs. the reason we were renting is because sam lost all the money from the sale of our home.about 600,000 worth and didnt even get us a new home.or any money for ourselves.weve had t o rent ever since. hes left us stranded before but never like this with absolutely nothing,im scared for me and my daughter he has ruined 2 lives, ive never told my side of the story ive always sat back and listened.but he cant get away with what he has done to us anymore.especially to my baby.he has ruined her life!!!!!!!.I dont know what we are going to do today when we have to leave here, but this is the true sam grizzle,he is everything and more of the things you have heard. "

That sucks, I've read that in the past and I'll probably be vilified for it but this lady made a lot of stupid choices when the writing was probably all over the wall many times over. Sure Sam is responsible but she's responsible too for getting in that spot in the first place.
not if she was lied to and promised certain things that never came to fruition

First off, I'd be shocked if that sub sandwich employee story is true.

More importantly, I really think it's bad to glorify people like Sam Grizzle or even just to find these stories entertaining. His life is pretty sad and when you guys hear these stories and think "oh my god that's hysterical" you're probably saying that because you've not seen his day-to-day existence. It's really sad. He's the cautionary tale you should use to dissuade people from entering the poker world and exemplifies the broken-down desperate gambler that everybody fears becoming. Most of these stories reflect either a desperate gambling addiction or a man who realizes that hoping to get lucky on a stake is his best option as he's too old and too unpalatable to employers to get a job. It's not funny that this guy goes around begging for money and is constantly broke, even if every once in a while he goes on a heater and loses it and even if he has a dry sense of humor about his predicament.

This. It may seem funny to everyone, but it's disgusting. The only reason he can go on ridiculous streaks like he has in the past is because he has absolutely no regard for the value of the money he's gambling with. What kind of opportunities has he stolen from his children by not walking away from the table with thousands upon thousands of dollars, on which the only value he places is funding his next adrenaline rush? What kind of shame and embarrassment has he brought to them by being publicly humiliated for neglecting his children to play cards?
