' Poker pro Patrik Antonius said, “I loaned him $700,000 . . . He never paid me back.” '

Robert Alexander is rumored to have made alot of money through the success of Grand Theft Auto and seems to have degened it all off + more gambling. I'm guessing this debt is probably ~10 years old, but just another Vegas high stakes story of degens playing the "big game" on credit who never pay back.

It's happened plenty of times in the big games in order to keep them going. This type of thing has happened plenty of times, including the one time with Galfond a few yrs ago.

Negreanu and Antonius are both owned about 10 million dollars/euros. By players.

The act of lending a broke gambler money makes zero sense.

i agree totally........... and as per the other comment that PA didn't know he was broke, any bank would want so much paperwork and security for this. at least a contract.

i defiinitely don't understand lending alot of money (seemingly with no or little interest) to anyone without some documentation/security (or to close family members/great friends)

Kuinka paljon sinulle ollaan velkaa?

”Surullista, mutta summa on kahdeksannumeroinen.”

How much people owe you money?

It's sad but the number is eight figures.

Not all poker loans are created equal.

The loans that are often between "pros" that don't know each other very well are reverse freerolls in a lot of cases (the loaner usually has no upside, only downside). One possible upside is that the loanee may reciprocate the favour in the future. But generally, if you don't know the person very, very well, these kind of loans are bad ideas.

Loaning a "fish" that you're playing poker with is a different story. You are gaining immediate equity if this fish keeps playing. You hope the % chance of him paying you back combined with the added equity of playing more poker with him makes the loan +EV. So basically, if you loan 100k and figure you're only 95% to get paid back, it can still be a +EV move if you think playing poker with guy is worth 5k+. Needless to say, it's very easy for these loans to be -EV also, but people making out that there's no upside to loaning money in these scenarios are mistaken.
