A Tribute to My Friend Chip Reese
December 4, 2007

With the utmost sadness and shock I learned this morning that my buddy Chip Reese is no longer among us. The world just got poorer today with the loss of Chip Reese.

Although it is almost impossible for me to understand, Chip died last night after a sudden case of pneumonia. What makes it even harder to sink in is the fact that I just talked to him last night around 7 PM.

Chip was not only a world class poker player but also a world class individual and I am proud to call him my friend. Chip was the kind of gambler we should all strive to be.

Chip's experience, good spirit and integrity made him the best ambassador for the game and I am certain that the whole poker community will miss him greatly. I, for one, will miss the fierce competition, our friendship and his guidance off and on the poker table.

Chip was extremely gifted and very well respected in the poker world as well as in the business world. His list of achievements is endless with his 2006 WSOP HORSE win as the latest proof of his excellent poker skills.

My thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Chip's family to whom he was always devoted as a father and a father figure. Although it is little consolation, it is my hope that they know of the great legacy that Chip is leaving behind.

Gus

I was fortunate to meet Chip last year. During Chip's interview with Cardplayer I phoned in a question about Chip's biggest "scores". Chip invited me to meet him in Bobby's Room and he would share a few stories with me. A few months later I took him up on his invitation and had a twenty minute chat with him while the Big Game was going on at the Bellagio. Chip told me some stories and we had a few laughs. I'm glad I had the chance to meet the greatest poker player of all time.

Condolences to his family, relatives, etc.

@Jazzy3113:

What should people write instead of RIP and condelnces, or whatever?
Should they write: Oh well another individual just died, why do you care?
The difference between a marine and Chip Reese is probably the significance in the poker world.
It's the same with scientist that cried when Albert Einstein died.
It's not always a personal thing.
I personally dont care when some football player dies, I am not interested in football, but I would care if some soccer player dies.

I expressed myself weird, i am sorry. Hopefully you understand what i mean.
Furthermore I do agree on some points you make.

RIP, Chip... The poker world lost a world class player today.

(p.s. why are people such douchebags in this thread? Jokes aren't necessary)

It doesn't really matter now, but does anyone know how pneumonia can be fatal within such a short amount of time?
Reading Gus' statement it must be a terrible shock to all the people who were close to him.

Lara Miller, who usually does PR work for CardPlayer, is handling all media requests for the Brunson family. She's asked that I post the following statements from Doyle and Todd on her behalf:

Doyle:

“I have lost one of my oldest and dearest friends today. He was one of the most unique individuals I have ever known and Poker has lost one of the greats today.”

Todd:

“I have lost a mentor and friend today. He was like a family member to me.”

The Brunson family requests that they be allowed to grieve the passing of their dear friend. Funeral arrangement and donation information will be released along with an official statement in the next couple of days.

If anyone browsing these boards is looking to get in touch with the Brunsons regarding this matter, they request that you do so through Lara. She can be reached at lara.miller@cardplayer.com.

A true gentelman. My son is partially named after him (Reece).

Pneumonia can be fatal given other medical contitions. My son has had it twice this year and me once.

I really like this idea, if you are interested for real you should send an email to the WSOP council (don't know who are members now but I know that DN used to be a member) so that they evaluate it. You have my +1

it doesn't make sense that someone who is only 56 and seemingly healthy can succumb so quickly to pneumonia. and how do you get pneumonia in vegas to begin with? its the driest climate ever. did he have any other undisclosed health conditions that might have weakened him? this is definitely unexpected and tragic. at least he got to live a life that was filled with success. rip chip.
